THE OPPOSITION PROCEEDING OF RAISIO GROUP’S SITOSTANOL ESTER
PATENT CONTINUES

As Raisio has previously announced, the European Patent Office
questioned Raisio’s sitostanol ester patent in an oral opposition
proceeding in 2001 at a competitor’s initiative. Raisio appealed
this decision and the proceedings resumed yesterday in Munich. The
European Patent Office’s Board of Appeal set the dispute aside and
transferred the proceedings to the first Instance. Raisio
estimates, that the final decision on the coverage of the
sitostanol ester patent will be made in 3 to 5 years.

Raisio holds 12 stanol ester related patent families,
approximately 100 approved patents and more than 70 patent
applications. These patents cover the production of stanol ester
and its use in several product applications.
