Rational’s new combi steamers go to school
Schools can be certain of getting their new Rational SelfCookingCenter 5 Senses by September
The clamour to upgrade school kitchens to cope with the expected increase in school meal take up in September is picking up momentum. Dealers and manufacturers are experiencing an increase in enquiries and some sources are predicting a shortage of supply.
However Rational, who has just launched its new SelfCookingCenter 5 Senses combi steamer, wants to reassure schools and dealers that there will be no problem in fulfilling orders.
“We already anticipated a higher demand with the launch of the SelfCookingCenter 5 Senses,” says Lee Norton, managing director of Rational UK. “So we are well prepared to meet all school and Local Authority orders and have the units installed and up and running for the new autumn term.”
The new SelfCookingCenter 5 Senses is the first intelligent commercial cooking appliance that actually interacts with chefs, getting to know the way they work so that, together, the chef and their combi can always deliver the best possible cooking results. The latest combi steamer technology is ideal for school catering - producing healthier foods at lower running costs. It’s also incredibly easy to use.
At the heart of the new combi is the interactive cooking control (iCookingControl) technology. This ensures food is prepared exactly the way the school chef wants, by monitoring, controlling and adjusting temperature, time, air speed and the cooking climate – that is, the balance of dry heat and steam. The iCookingControl features a monitor that enables the school chef to see exactly what is happening, at any time.
The Rational is brilliant for cooking mixed loads, the new 5 Senses, iLevelControl, not only shows staff which foods are compatible with each other, but also ensures each is prepared using the chef’s preferred specifications and cooking methods.
And, especially popular with staff in the school kitchen is the 5 Senses’ upgraded automatic cleaning system. Called Efficient CareControl, it uses reformulated cleaning tablets that last 50% longer than previous versions, reducing costs and minimising environmental impact. The fully automatic cleaning process can be set into motion at the end of the day so the unit is clean and sparkling and ready for use when staff return to work in the morning.
For those school caterers who want to get the most out of their combi steamer, Rational has also introduced its Academy School for Schools, an exclusive series of free training and development seminars.

The latest Rational SelfCookingCenter 5 Senses includes:
- HiDensityControl uses patented dynamic air mixing technology, which precisely controls the speed of the unit’s fan to channel the heat and humidity to exactly where it is needed. This not only delivers outstanding cooking quality, but also allows chefs to maximise output, since they can load more food into the same size cooking cabinet. It also reduces energy consumption and cuts production time compared to previous models.
- iLevelControl tells the user which different foods can be cooked together at the same time and intelligently controls the cooking time for each rack. It means that everything is cooked to perfection, every time.
- iCookingControl regulates the cooking processes – even the most complex of cooking routines can be initiated at the touch of a button, thanks to the simple control system. However, numerous new cooking options allow chefs to adjust the cooking process according to their own recipes. They always know exactly what’s going on, since they can see the status of the cooking process via the control panel. This means no more time-consuming routine tasks, such as monitoring food, and more time for essentials such as creativity.
- Efficient CareControl further enhances efficiency by detecting the build up of cooking residues in the SelfCookingCenter and always suggesting the appropriate cleaning level. This saves up to 40% in terms of energy, water and chemicals.
