In a first for the UK, customers visiting Freshney Place Shopping Centre, Grimsby this fortnight are being treated to an eclectic art exhibition featuring some of the world’s most famous artists, including Dali and Picasso.

The OUT OF THE DARK exhibition is attracting a huge amount of interest from art enthusiasts across the country, and is the first art event of such a high calibre to be held in a UK shopping centre. Running from 13th – 26th September, the exhibition will occupy two units within the busy shopping centre as well as taking over Abbey Walk Gallery in the town centre. Works by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Banksy, Ronnie Wood and Damien Hirst are amongst a selection of famous pieces of original art which will be shown at the unique exhibition, many of which are on public view for the first time, after being housed in personal collections or hidden away in storerooms and private galleries for many years. Amanda Austin, Centre Director at Freshney Place said: “We are thrilled to be hosting such a wonderful and exciting exhibition here at Freshney Place. We currently have over 250,000 visitors every week, all of whom will be able to view iconic pieces of art which many people will never get the chance to see. The project is a fantastic coup for the town, and we are proud to be part of such a unique public exhibition.” Each day, one incredibly high-profile piece of art will be brought from the main gallery to Freshney Place and placed on display for customers, starting with Rolf Harris on Tuesday, 14th September and Damien Hirst on Wednesday, 15th September. “Freshney Place was the obvious partner for us during this spectacular event,” explained gallery owner, Gill Gibbon. “We wanted to make this exhibition as accessible as possible; as we do appreciate that art can be considered a bit scary. By bringing these incredible pieces to Freshney Place we knew we could give the greatest number of people in the town the opportunity to see these wonderful pieces of art sit alongside pieces from Grimsby’s home grown talent,” continued Gill. The OUT OF THE DARK exhibition will until 26th September between 10am-4pm.
