Eddie The Eagle launches Winter Olympic highlights series with Readly

With almost 30 million Brits following the Winter Olympic Games in Milano, Cortina this month, ski jumping Olympian Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards partners with Readly to celebrate the Winter Games. The digital magazine and newspaper app looks back at archival content including his heroic landing at the 1988 games, along with the latest features from this month's games.
Research shows the most popular Winter Olympic events to follow are figure skating (36%), ski jumping (32%) and the bobsleigh (29%), made famous by the Jamaican team. Ice hockey (25%), snow boarding (24%), curling (21%) and speed skating (21%) are also firm favourites amongst Brits.
But when it comes to our top Winter Olympic moments of all time, whilst we value the sporting prowess and athleticism of medal winners, some of the veteran legends and entertaining outsiders are also amongst our most memorable moments.
Torvill & Dean winning gold with Boléro at the Sarajevo games in 1984 was voted the top Winter Olympic moment in history by almost half of Brits (44%). The Jamaican bobsleigh team's run down in Calgary 1988 was voted as second place (28%) and Eddie the Eagle’s ski jumping performance was the third favourite moment (27%), showed the research of 1,000 adults by Readly.
Other top Winter Olympic memories include Robin Cousins taking gold in figure skating, Eve Muir winning gold in curling and Lizzy Yarnold defending her olympic title in the skeleton.
“It’s fantastic to see that people remember and appreciate my efforts in Calgary over thirty years ago. The Winter Olympics is fascinating to follow, you never quite know what’s going to happen and it’s great to look back on some of these entertaining moments that create a spectacle and grip the nation for years to come.
Of course for some it’s all about going for gold and winning year after year and that is wonderful to see. For me, just participating was the gold medal but if I had my time again, I'd try cross skiing or cross boarding! It’s heartwarming to see so many people following the nations athletes and wanting to read not just the latest issues but also look back at memorable moments from Winter Olympics gone by too”, says Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, English ski jumper and Olympian
The top reasons cited for following the Winter Olympic Games include the intrigue of superhuman powers and sporting prowess (37%), supporting the national team (20%), escape from the winter blues (20%), uplifting news (18%) and inspiration for winter travel (13%).
This is the first time Readly, the digital magazine and newspaper app with over 8,000 titles, has offered its readers an Olympic series and coincides with the Winter Olympics taking place this week in Cortina, Milan. The Winter Olympic Series includes stand out issues covering some of the most memorable moments in Winter Olympic history plus all the latest Winter Olympic issues from the Milano Cortina Games.
