Reading time, kids! Summer holiday reading with the family magazine app
With temperatures rising and the school break approaching, travel is on the horizon. Over fifty percent (52 percent) of families will be going on holiday this summer and 42 percent will travel overseas. So how can we make the most of the summer holidays to relax together whilst encouraging children to nurture their love of reading?
The school summer break is the perfect time to encourage reading for fun and stimulate reading fluency. However, despite evidence that reading is essential for children’s development, a third (31 percent) of parents and grandparents don’t read together with their children according to the YouGov research for Readly digital magazine and newspaper app.
Research shows that almost one in ten children most enjoy reading comics out of all literature choices and one in four (23%) parents believe that comics and magazines create a habit and passion for reading.
– With the holiday season approaching, we’re looking into activities to keep the kids entertained and their brains active, whilst having fun, relaxing and enjoying a well deserved break. Digital reading amongst children and indeed all the family is increasing and research shows that it is beneficial to read various forms of quality content such as comics and magazines as well as books. The summer holiday is the perfect time for children and parents to read magazines and comics - both alone for ‘me time’ and shared reading together. With thousands of magazines in one app, Readly is a great app for families travelling this summer and a sustainable way to read too, says Chris Couchman, Head of Content at Readly.
Readly, the digital magazine and newspaper subscription app, has over 80 Disney magazines such as Disney’s Frozen, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, High School Musical, Star WarsTM and MARVEL as well as much loved children’s magazines such as National Geographic Kids, Beano and GoGirl on its platform.
With unlimited reading and parental controls in place, young readers can immerse themselves in stories, fantasy adventures, craft ideas and puzzles via your mobile, a tablet or desktop whether you’re relaxing at home or in a far flung holiday destination.
When it comes to holiday priorities this year, relaxation is top priority with over half of families (59 percent) opting for a relaxing summer break. Exploring the destination (55 percent) and learning about a different country or culture (37 percent) also featured highly on the agenda of holiday makers.
One in four families (23 percent) will go on an active holiday and one in ten (12 percent) will choose a holiday that entails creativity. 8 percent are hoping their holiday provides new inspiration and 5 percent are making green, sustainable holiday plans.
With unlimited reading to over 7,000 titles, Readly has a magazine for all the family and is the perfect holiday app. As it gives five profiles per household, all the family can read their favourite titles. Deep dive into a thought-provoking feature or catch up on business, celebrity & gossip or news whilst the kids read their favourite comic or puzzles.
