Two thirds of political views are influenced by politicians’ private lives: Readly and The Standard launch retro US Election Series
New research reveals that two thirds of people (72%) believe that a political leader's private life has impacted their opinion of them as a leader. Whilst 10 percent believe it has changed for the better, a third (35%) said it has been detrimental to their belief in a politician, showed the research by Readly digital magazine and newspaper app.
When it comes to public scrutiny, two thirds of people (71%) believe that personal actions impacting a politician's public duties should be openly reported and one in ten (10%) said any personal behavior should be brought to light due to their role and responsibility with the public. 15% said only their actions as public officials should be reported.
Whilst politicians' actions in their private lives are impacting public opinion, a third (28%) of people believe that there is gender disparity when it comes to reporting on politicians and that the lives of female politicians are more closely watched than their male counterparts.
