Canadian Photographers Celebrated at World's Largest Action Sports Photography Contest
Vancouver’s Scott Serfas named category winner at Red Bull Illume, crowned one of the world’s top ten action sports photographers
A handful of Canada’s most gifted photographers were crowned at the Red Bull Illume international photography contest ceremony last night, with Vancouver’s own Scott Serfas claiming the top prize in the Illumination category for his photo of snowboarding pro Travis Rice on the slopes of Alaska’s Tordrillo Mountains.
“This turned out to be the last photo I took during what was the best snowboarding trip of my life, during the making of the Art of FLIGHT snowboarding film” Serfas recounts, “I really wanted to shoot a photo from a helicopter. The sun was setting so fast, and as Travis dropped into the line and made his second turn down the mountain, I snapped this shot.”
The 2013 Red Bull Illume Overall Winner, Top 10 category winners and Top 50 finalists were also unveiled at last night’s ceremony and British Columbia’s Jussi Grznar, Ray Demski, Paul Bride and Sterling Lorence submitted five of the top 50 in the competition. Canada’s Jody MacDonald also submitted a top-five photo in the Illumination category. German photographer Lorenz Holder was crowned Overall Winner for his remarkable shot of a snowboarder next to an enormous satellite dish. The top 50 photos can be found here.
“There are talented photographers and then there are gifted photographers,” said Jym Wilson, senior photo editor at USA Today and one of 50 Red Bull Illume judges. “I saw a lot of talent but also saw some truly gifted photographers. These are not just action photographers but people with great technical and artistic skills.”
The Red Bull Illume Exhibit:

- The illuminated exhibition will be open at night, from 8pm to 11pm only, from August 30 to September 15
- The Red Bull Illume exhibit will then head to the US before traveling around the world’s capitals and cultural hubs for the next two years as a unique night-time only exhibit
