WHISTLER, BC – June 6th, 2013 Fusing elements of slopestyle, dirt jump, and North Shore mountain biking, Red Bull Joyride will once again culminate into one gravity-fed, season-defining freeride mountain bike competition on Saturday, August 17th in Whistler, BC. Eighteen of the world’s best riders will battle it out for a chunk of the $50,000 in prize money and historical bragging rights.

"Joyride is the biggest slopestyle course of the year, which means it needs the best preparation. Any good course has rider input and Red Bull Joyride is honestly a rider inspired course," said Brandon Semenuk.

The Course

The overall line of the course has been changed to move the features across the hill more than the past, from top to bottom. This theme begins with the start, where the riders will veer into the woods, rail a berm, then come out to the first drop going across the hill.

“Designed by the leading masterminds in the sport, this will be the course to watch,” said Darren Berrecloth

All the features have been re-designed, the cabin will be repositioned with a "whale tail" on the deck. The radius of all the ramps will be longer, and the course will have speed checks where the riders can regroup and focus on laying down a clean run full of tricks. A good example of this is the quarter pipe ramp in the middle of the course, where the riders will actually come back up the hill to slow down, then drop in again for the bottom half of their run. The second half of the course has two lines with opposing features. This works great for slopestyle, as the riders can choose to ride left or right features for the quarter pipe, the hip jumps, and the wall ride. The last feature will have a dirt take off and will be a large step down into the finish.

"Ten years ago, the slope at Whistler Bike Park known as "The Boneyard" hosted the world's first ever mountain bike slopestyle contest.  Over the past decade, the dirt on that hill has stood in many different formations and challenged the best riders in the world.  At this momentous 10 year point in our sport, its only fitting that the riders have joined forces with the dirt to create a course that will showcase the ever-evolving nature of slopestyle; staying true to the roots while cutting a path for the mayhem that lies ahead,” said Cam McCaul.

The new course will have more judge-able features than in the past—12 in total—and will be fair for riders who are more comfortable hitting features to the left or to the right. Athletes feel that the new design is safer due to the features flowing across the hill, allowing riders to check their speed and meaning more runs completed and less crashing. The challenge for the competitor will be to show off their skills to the judges with technical tricks on all 12 features.  Riders have shown early appreciation for the completely redesigned track that has gone beyond just moving a few ramps around.  With athlete input throughout the design process, the goal has been to make Joyride the best slopestyle contest ever.
