Pilgrim to Drive Red Line Oil #46 at Infineon
Whitney Motorsports Chevy Runs with Road Course Specialist in NASCAR Sprint Cup This Weekend
Benicia, Calif. (June 21, 2011) - As a “super sub” for regular NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver JJ Yeley, road course specialist and former 24 Hours of Daytona winner Andy Pilgrim will drive the #46 Red Line Oil Chevrolet for Whitney Motorsports in Sonoma this weekend.
Pilgrim is a factory GM driver in the CTS-V Coupe for Cadillac Racing in the SCCA World Challenge Series, where he is a former series champion. Based in Boca Raton, Fla., Pilgrim has multiple IMSA Championships and nearly 500 race starts including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Pilgrim has a long history with Corvette Racing, where he was teammate to Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
"I am really looking forward to this amazing opportunity to run with the Whitney Motorsports team at Infineon Raceway,” said Pilgrim. “I did two Nationwide Series races in 2007 with JR Motorsports and had a blast.”
Born in Nottingham, England and now a US citizen, the driver knows that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is no easy proposition. “Just because I'm a road course guy, I'm under no illusions and my first focus will be to make sure we qualify. The first NASCAR road course race I was ever aware of was in the mid 80's at Riverside and ever since then I've dreamed about having a chance to be out there with the NASCAR guys. Come to think about it, if they're honest, I think every road course guy has those same thoughts.”
Team owner Dusty Whitney, owns multiple collision repair centers in Michigan and operates the #46 team from Mooresville, NC, with Cup series race winner Tony Furr as crew chief. “We have been running very well lately, with both our #46 and #81 cars making the show regularly,” Whitney said. “This helps us save up the budget to run hard and to the finish with Andy this weekend. Our road course car is a great one, so we expect a solid result.”
