A Jubilee fete fit for a Queen raises £3,500 for Retail Trust uniting community
Dignitaries and local guests in their hundreds turned out for the Jubilee Fete at the Crookfur Retirement Estate in Newton Mearns, Glasgow, raising £3,500 for Retail Trust, the only charity that looks after all three million people working in retail.
John Amabile, of 60 minute makeover fame, declared the free fete open to the public on Saturday 2 June. Other distinguished guests included Lord Provost Alastair Carmichael, East Renfrewshire Council; Patricia Thomson, Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Renfrewshire; Ken Macintosh MSP; Jim Murphy MP, and Retail Trust Chief Executive Nigel J L Rothband.
The retailers generously supporting the fete included Matalan, House of Fraser, Asda, Waitrose and other small businesses. A host of volunteers donated their time, enabling all the funds raised on the day to go directly to Retail Trust to help those working in retail, their families, plus those retired from the sector, including residents at the Crookfur Estate in Glasgow and Retail Trust’s remaining four retirement estates throughout the UK.
Zorbing, a bouncy castle, face-painting, a collection of animals, and Crookfur’s answer to the High Street proved popular with the crowds, contributing to the amount raised.
Nigel J L Rothband, Chief Executive of Retail Trust said: “A big thank you for the tremendous efforts by all the businesses, staff, volunteers, residents and their families, which created a real community event to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. While the money raised will greatly benefit those in retail, the fete was also important to raise awareness not only for the retirement estate, but for all the other services Retail Trust offers.”
