ONLY WATCH 2015: RICHARD MILLE DONATES THE RAFAEL NADAL RM 27-02 TOURBILLON PROTOTYPE
For the 6th edition of the Only Watch auction, Richard Mille and Rafael Nadal are partnering up once again to donate the RM 27-02 tourbillon prototype. This unique piece has accompanied “Rafa” to all the biggest Grand Slam tournaments, from the French and US Opens all the way to Wimbledon. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to research against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
With the Rafael Nadal RM 27-02 tourbillon prototype, the Swiss brand unveiled the very first skeletonized baseplate to be known as “unibody”. Inspired by the bodywork of racecars and machined from NTPT carbon, this construction increases rigidity and shock-resistance, and seamlessly fuses the case middle and the baseplate, eliminating the need to join the two components together.
A true technological feat requiring knowledge and mastery of micro-machining, this sculptural baseplate is enhanced by three-dimensional grade-5 titanium bridges, which bring titanium and carbon together to offer unparalleled strength and a depth of vision that is rare in watchmaking. The RM27-02 caliber—regulated by a tourbillon, no less—can resist impacts of up to 5,000 G.
Its bridges support an impressive mechanical heart, which can run for over 70 hours without detriment to its regularity thanks to a rapidly rotating barrel that delivers constant power from beginning to end of operation.
Worn during the 2015 season by the Majorcan tennis star, this unique piece has enabled Richard Mille to finalize the development of this exceptional caliber, whose case features highly original materials such as NTPT carbon and TPT® quartz.
With a maximum thickness of 45 microns, the layers of TPT ® quartz and NTPT carbon are superimposed using an automatic positioning system that modifies the orientation of the fibers between each layer by 45°. The component is then heated to 120°C in an autoclave similar to those used for aeronautics parts. The various layers of TPT ® quartz and NTPT carbon are revealed, like the heart of the baseplate, at random during the machining process, ensuring that each component is unique.
The bezel and solid case back in NTPT carbon / TPT ® quartz are then fixed to the unibody baseplate by 12 spline screws in grade-5 titanium. A sapphire crystal coated with anti-reflective treatment perfects the timepiece’s unique composition.
The RM 27-02 holds a special place in the brand’s history, as it marks a decisive evolution that has conditioned the design of future RM timepieces.
The RM 27-02 prototype will be accompanied by the outfit Rafael Nadal wore at the US Open, signed by the tennis champion himself.
The Only Watch auction will take place on November 7th in Geneva.

Cette 6ème édition de la vente aux enchères Only Watch donne à Richard Mille et Rafael Nadal une nouvelle occasion de s’associer pour offrir le prototype tourbillon RM 27-02. Cette pièce unique a accompagné Rafa sur tous les plus grands tournois du grand Chelem de Roland Garros à l’US Open en passant par Wimbledon. Les bénéfices de la vente seront reversés à la recherche contre les Myopathies de Duchenne.
Avec le prototype tourbillon RM 27-02 Rafael Nadal, la maison suisse a dévoilé la toute première platine squelettée monocoque. Inspirée des châssis des voitures de course et usinée dans du carbone NTPT , elle accroît la rigidité et la résistance aux chocs. Cette construction, qui a permis de fusionner la carrure et la platine, supprime ainsi toutes fixations entre les deux éléments.
Véritable prouesse technique requérant connaissance et maîtrise du micro-usinage, cette platine sculpturale est sublimée par des ponts en titane grade 5 tridimensionnels associant titane et carbone tout en offrant une profondeur
de vision rare en horlogerie ainsi qu’une résistance inédite. Le calibre RM27-02 qui est, rappelons-le, régulé par un mécanisme tourbillon, peut résister à des chocs de 5000G.
Ses ponts maintiennent une mécanique redoutable, capable de fonctionner sans altération de la régularité plus de 70 heures grâce au barillet à rotation rapide dont la puissance est constante du début à la fin de la marche.
Portée durant sa saison 2015 par le tennisman majorquin, cette pièce unique a permis à la maison jurassienne de finaliser le développement de ce calibre hors normes dont le boîtier fait appel à des matériaux inédits comme le
carbone NTPT et le quartz TPT®.
D’une épaisseur maximale de 45 microns, les couches de quartz TPT ® et de carbone NTPT sont superposées grâce à un système de dépose automatisé qui modifie de 45° l’orientation des fibres entre deux couches. L’ensemble est ensuite chauffé à 120° dans un autoclave similaire à ceux utilisés pour les pièces aéronautiques. Les différentes couches de quartz TPT ® et de carbone NTPT se révèlent, comme le coeur de la platine, de manière aléatoire lors de l’usinage qui fait de chaque composant une pièce unique.
La lunette et le fond plein en carbone NTPT - quartz TPT® sont ensuite fixés sur la platine monocoque au moyen de 12 vis spline en titane grade 5. La pose d’un verre saphir traité antireflet vient parfaire cette combinaison unique.
La RM 27-02 occupe une place particulière dans l’histoire de la Maison car elle marque une évolution décisive en orientant le dessin des futures montres RM.
Le prototype RM 27-02 sera accompagné de la tenue de Rafael Nadal portée et dédicacée lors de l’US open.
La vente aux enchères Only Watch se déroulera le 7 novembre prochain à Genève.
