Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant declared this week "Tornado Preparedness Week"

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant has declared February 9th-13th “Tornado Preparedness Week”, and we want you to take the necessary steps to creating a plan for safety.

According to the National Weather Service, tornados are capable of destroying well-made structures, uprooting trees and hurling objects through the air like deadly missiles. The following are some tips provided by MEMA to help you know what to do.

  1. Watch for notifications - This includes preparing members of your family and neighbors to be attentive to weather reports, social media, TV, radio and smart phone updates.  Staying informed about your surroundings is most immediate defense.
  2. If your home is a substantial structure, identify the safe room.  Include in your safe room a storing place for your emergency kit.  Your emergency kit should include the following items:
  • Water
  • Food
  • Medications
  • Radio
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Important Documents

  3. Should you need to evacuate your home, having the following measures in place will be really helpful.

  • Develop an evacuation plan & communicate this plan with your family and neighbors.
  • Know where you will go, who you will call, what you will do and how your plan should be executed.
  • Identify public shelters and establish a contact with your local fire department, police or sheriff’s department and EMS service to find out who the emergency responders are in your area.

Staying prepared and informed for severe weather can be the key to saving you or loved ones. For more information on the steps to being tornado season ready, check out MEMA's Be Prepared tips.
