The Rīga 2014 Foundation (Nodibinājums Rīga 2014), Rīga’s European Capital of Culture organiser, is announcing accreditation procedures for foreign media covering the European Capital of Culture programme. Applications for accreditation are being accepted as of October 14 2013 and throughout 2014.

Those planning to cover the Opening week events of the European Capital of Culture programme, to be held from 15 to 19 January 2014, are invited to submit applications for media accreditation up to 19 December 2013. This is necessary so as to be able prepare the materials required for media work and to provide optimum working conditions.

Applications for media accreditation can be submitted electronically by completing an online accreditation application, available in the Media section of the official European Capital of Culture website:
http://media.riga2014.org/en.

Working with our foreign partners and media, we are experiencing huge interest in Rīga as a European Capital of Culture, hence we strongly encourage timely accreditation and that trips to Rīga be planned in good time.

Media accreditation cards issued by the Rīga 2014 Foundation will give representatives of Latvian and foreign media the opportunity to cover European Capital of Culture events, concerts, exhibitions, theatre performances, film screenings, etc. A Media Centre will be run throughout the year at the Rīga 2014 office (Rīga Congress Centre) for the convenience of visiting media representatives.

Rīga’s European Capital of Culture programme consists of several hundred events across a wide variety of artistic and cultural genres. The Rīga 2014 programme features international-class events and Rīga will see concerts by world-renowned Latvian artists. Many of the 2014 events will take place in unusual and surprising locations.

The media accreditation procedures for the 8thWorld Choir Games (9 to 19 July 2014) and the European Film Academy Awards ceremony (13 December 2014) will be announced separately.

European Capitals of Culture have been selected since 1985. This is an initiative of the European Commission and the idea belongs to former Greek Minister for Culture, Melina Mercouri. In addition to Rīga, the city of Umeå in northern Sweden is a 2014 European Capital of Culture.
