DISC 2006 is about the fundamentals, limitations and algorithms underlying distributed services/computers, i.e. services that communicate and cooperate across networks which are fixed or mobile. With the advent of the Internet, wireless networks and webservices this area is now in the foreground in computer research.

Dr Lamport has invented fundamental algorithms in the area of distributed computing for agreement among a set of computers communicating across the network. His ideas, concepts and algorithms are used todays in the area of distributed databases and fault tolerant mission critical distributed applications (stock exchanges, aviation command and control systems). He is also known as the author of Latex, the type setting program used in most scientific publications.

Professor Rabin is a Turing award winner, the equivalent of Nobel Prize in computer science. His work in cryptographic algorithms has been vital for secure transactions in our distributed IT society.

Professor Lynch has worked on the fundamental limitations of computing in the context of distributed systems. A famous early result is known as the "impossibility of consensus in asynchronous systems" which roughly means it is impossible to design an deterministic algorithm for solving the problem of agreement on a single value among a set of computers that communicate across an asynchronous network, a network that the transmission of messages can take arbitrary time or a network that can partition, very much like the Internet of today.
