National construction and engineering services contractor, JPCS, has received a health and safety accolade from the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA).

During its annual conference, the RSTA presented JPCS its Behavioral Safety Award for the outstanding health and safety levels the company has achieved and the innovative culture it has developed.

The RSTA Health and Safety Awards aim to capture and promote industry best practice and were judged by a panel of industry experts, including representatives from the Health and Safety Executive.

The Association commended JPCS for its focus on health and safety and the visible leadership support which instills best practice working methods across the whole business.

Peter Shone, managing director of JPCS, said: “This safety award is testament to the hard work of all our staff  to make JPCS a safe place to work and a safe partner to our clients. Our health and safety ethos is embedded in all business operations from recruitment, through to performance management and appraisals. We believe everyone has a part to play and that all our staff are leaders in safety.

“Well done to everyone at JPCS and thanks to the RSTA for recognising our hard work.”

JPCS is a nationwide contractor, delivering safe and sustainable civil engineering and maintenance services to the public and private sectors, across the highways, rail and energy markets. The company maintains the highways and byways of the UK and has a growing reputation for the robustness of its service, its use of environmentally friendly products from recycled sources and its product innovation.

Joy Jones, HM Principal Inspector, Construction Division, Sector (National) Safety Team at the Health and Safety Executive, presented JPCS with the award.

Jones commented: “JPCS Ltd was awarded first prize for the Behavioural Safety category. Their entry demonstrated a comprehensive approach to laying the foundations for sustained health and safety improvements across the business and supply chain.  Of particular note was the level of leadership, integration of health and safety within other business ideals and the understanding that all levels of employees needed to be involved in order to facilitate cultural change.”

Commenting on the RSTA Health and Safety Awards, Howard Robinson, RSTA Chief Executive, said:

“Health and safety should never be an after-thought or something that is simply bolted-on. It must be integral to all day-to-day business processes. The winning companies, indeed all those companies who entered these awards, should be congratulated on their ambition to deliver a high level health and safety competence that is an integral component of their business.”

The RSTA Behavioral Safety Award adds to JPCS’ growing trophy cabinet. At the end of last year the firm received a jury commendation award for leadership in the UK Excellence Awards. This was the first time a business in the highways sector has been awarded an award by the British Quality Foundation.
