KDC adds global safety award to collection

Decommissioning and demolition specialist KDC has received a prestigious international safety award from global chemical manufacturer and processor, Dow.

Dow’s annual safety awards recognise a project carried out by a contractor with the most impressive safety records.

KDC’s award was for the demolition of all infrastructure at Dow’s Wilton, Teesside site, following its closure. The Dow plant was the UK’s only producer of ethylene oxide and glycol (EO/EG).

Manchester based KDC is one of only eight contractors in Dow’s global demolition and decommission approved contactors framework. Projects undertaken by all eight contractors were considered for the award.

With rigid safety policies in place, the KDC project reported zero accidents over 24 weeks. The project was also praised for recycling more than 97 per cent of waste. This included 10,000 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

KDC’s director of health, safety and environment, Martin O’Donnell, said:

“This is a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of the safety culture within our organisation. Accident prevention is of paramount importance to us and this is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the KDC team.”

Will Simpson, director of oil, gas and processes at KDC, who was responsible for delivering the Dow Wilton on Teesside project, said:

“It’s great to have our excellent safety record publically recognised by Dow. We always have robust procedures in place and up to date training to ensure the well-being of our employees, our suppliers and clients. Safe practices and safety aware people are vital in our line of business – there is nothing more important at KDC than working safely.”

Richard Smith, Dow’s global demolition director said:

“KDC continues to demonstrate an outstanding commitment to the safe planning and execution of all field work on Dow demolition projects. We truly believe KDC’s superlative performance is a reflection of the leadership and support of the entire KDC management team, as well as the diligence and dedication of all KDC personnel.”

KDC previously won the Dow Safety Award in 2007.
