Tesco slip leads to ‘Beckham-style’ injury
79 year old Ronald Fryer thought his football injury days were behind him after a bad tackle put him out of action 40 years ago - but a slip in Tesco caused a ‘David Beckham-style’ rupture.
Mr Fryer slipped and fell on a wet floor at the entrance inside the Tesco store at St Peter’s Drive in Worcester.
X-rays at the Royal Worcester Hospital confirmed he had fractured a metatarsal bone in his foot – the same injury that crocked David Beckham and Wayne Rooney during the past two World Cup campaigns
Mr Fryer already suffered from a long standing right ankle injury caused in 1971 during a football match which ended his playing days. Despite this he has since enjoyed a successful career as a local cricket umpire.
Mr Fryer said:
“The pain was unbearable and I hope that nobody else slips in the store and gets the same injury. My worry is that the cold weather this winter will bring ice and snow into many shops and there will be more victims. I hope the shops in Worcester are vigilant to this happening and take steps to prevent other people suffering the same injury.”
Victoria Price, partner of law firm Price & Slater, which represents supermarket injury victims, said:
“Tesco failed in its duty of care for Mr Fryer and we have agreed a suitable sum of compensation. It is a warning to other retailers in Worcester that they should maintain safe environment on their premises so that people can shop safe in the knowledge they won’t end up in hospital like Mr Fryer.”
