Koblenz, 13/09/2022 – As the end of summer heaves into view and the days gradually get shorter, it is time for the grape harvest to begin. The first of the vines used to produce the premium Rhineland‑Palatinate wines have ripened.

Wine from Rhineland‑Palatinate is gold in every sense. Almost 70 per cent of wines produced in Germany are grown here. Surrounded as they are by these vine-covered slopes, the Romantic Cities have plenty of foodie treats to offer.

This culture shaped by wine goes hand in hand with the lively atmosphere of the six cities between the Rhine and the Moselle. Visitors can enjoy the outstanding wines and regional specialities at numerous traditional wine fairs and modern wine events.

The Romantic Cities are Idar-Oberstein, Koblenz, Mainz, Speyer, Trier and Worms. Together with the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland‑Palatinate (GDKE), they combine the charm of an imperial history with world-famous wines and heartfelt hospitality.

Wine and walking in Koblenz

You cannot think about Koblenz without thinking about wine. And that has always been the case. The Romans brought the first grapes with them more than 2,000 years ago. You can now soak up these thousands of years of wine-related culture in this charming city, the only one to straddle both the Rhine and the Moselle.

We all know that the best way to enjoy the views is with a glass of wine in your hands. And this is precisely what the WeinStadtWandern package, combining wine, walking and the city of Koblenz, is all about. The ready-made wine package is available to purchase from the Tourist Information offices in the Forum Confluentes. A range of walks of different lengths is also provided.

You can also visit one of the numerous winemakers on their estates, head to one of the wine bars, restaurants and pubs lining the river, or simply enjoy a tipple or two in the old town and immerse yourself in the culture of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine.

In keeping with this, Trier also boasts the oldest wine cellar in Germany, a place steeped in history and ancient stories. Visitors are given an insight into the past and an opportunity to sample the home-grown wines.

The biggest wine festival in Rhenish Hesse attracts wine lovers from far and wide to the state capital for the last weekend in August and the first in September. This year, some 50 winemakers from all over the region were represented. Particularly popular among the 250,000-odd visitors was the walkabout wine tasting, which offers a glass and a taster (100 ml) of wine from nine different stands.

This means you can sample the wines directly from the winemakers themselves in the city centre and other parts of the city, or you could head to one of the modern wine bars.
