NEW SIG FLAT ROOF INSULATION INITIATIVE SET TO BOOST SOCIAL HOUSING ENERGY SAVINGS

A new and innovative subsidy initiative that targets flat roof insulation refurbishments of domestic properties and flats is being unveiled by SIG Roofing Supplies – the leading supply chain manager of roofing materials in the UK. Launched in conjunction with the UK energy industry and linked to the government’s CERT scheme to reduce carbon emissions, this latest initiative will enable local authorities and housing associations to make substantial energy savings across social housing stock ahead of CERT’s expiry at the end of 2012.

Representing the first time that energy saving measures have been directed at flat roofs, and with potential savings of £160 per dwelling per annum and up to 800kg of carbon dioxide,* together with potential additional subsidies for Super Priority Groups within CERT, there is no better time for social housing landlords to initiate flat roof insulation refurbishments.

Business Development Manager at SIG Roofing Supplies, Derek Thomas comments: “With over 30 years experience in the roofing industry, SIG is in a prime position to pioneer this first-ever initiative dedicated to flat roofs and to support social landlords on maximizing energy savings on flat roofs.”

Derek continues: “Flat roofs are often overlooked and have bypassed the generous schemes and grants awarded for loft and cavity wall insulation, yet these too can offer lucrative energy savings when properly insulated. With around nine million lofts insulated to only 100mm - a thickness that has not been considered adequate since the early 1980's – there is tremendous scope for energy savings to be made across the whole UK housing stock.

To achieve recommended insulation on flat roof refurbishments to Part L of the Building Regulations, 120mm of PIR insulation boards would be required. As part of the scheme, Ofgem has insisted that all insulation must be BBA approved and as such SIG has partnered with the insulation industry to offer a comprehensive range of PIR rigid flat roof insulation that tackles heat loss where it matters most. Ideal as an overlay board and extremely light and versatile to handle, PIR boards can be used with metal, concrete and timber decks. Quick and easy to lay, they work with all flat roofing waterproofing systems including bitumen, single ply, liquid and GRP.

* Source: BRE based on calculation of U value improvement from 2.48 (Cold Deck) to 0.18 (Warm Deck). The resulting CO2 saving is 39.5kg per annum gross (ie without removal of the Comfort Factor, used in CERT of 15%) Fuel type – gas (ie the dominant home heating fuel type – if a weighted average fuel type had been taken, the CO2 saving could have been increased by about 10%). Typical average gas cost of 4p per KWh (figure taken from www.confusedaboutenergy.co.uk as at 1st Feb 2012 is 4.15p). The conversion rate is 0.1899 kg CO2 per KWh and the room temperature maintained at 21°C.
