OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR FLAT ROOF INSULATION INITIATIVE THAT DELIVERS REAL ENERGY SAVINGS
The innovative ‘Cash 4 U’ subsidy initiative unveiled by SIG Roofing Supplies that targets flat roof insulation refurbishments of domestic properties and flats, has received an overwhelming response from social landlords, with many having brought forward or extended refurbishments in order to benefit from the lucrative energy savings on offer ahead of CERT’s expiry at the end of 2012.
SIG – the leading supply chain manager of roofing materials in the UK – recently launched the scheme in conjunction with the UK energy industry. Linked to the government’s CERT scheme to reduce carbon emissions, this latest initiative enables local authorities and housing associations to make substantial savings on flat roof insulation and deliver significant energy savings to their tenants. It is also unlike any other scheme as it allows ‘part measures’ to be financially supported.
Representing the first time that energy saving measures have been directed at flat roofs, and with potential savings of £160 per dwelling per annum and up to 800kg of carbon dioxide,* there is now no better time for social housing landlords to initiate flat roof insulation refurbishments and save money. As with most CERT schemes, there are also additional subsidies for Super Priority Groups within CERT, which would virtually cover the cost of the insulation material.
Business Development Manager at SIG Roofing Supplies, Derek Thomas comments: “We are delighted with the speed at which social housing has responded to this initiative. Those local authorities and housing associations that haven’t yet taken advantage of this scheme not only risk losing out on the subsidy, their tenants would miss out on future energy savings. The more roofs refurbished, the more money and energy can be saved.”
Flat roofs are often overlooked and have bypassed the generous schemes and grants awarded for loft and cavity wall insulation, yet these too can offer lucrative energy savings when properly insulated. With around nine million lofts insulated to only 100mm - a thickness that has not been considered adequate since the early 1980's - there is tremendous scope for energy savings to be made across the whole UK housing stock.
To achieve recommended insulation on flat roof refurbishments to Part L of the Building Regulations, a U Value of 0.18 or better should be achieved which would equate to around 120mm of PIR insulation boards being installed. Only Ofgem approved insulation boards can receive CERT funding support and Ofgem has accepted BBA Certification as fitness for purpose assessment. SIG has partnered with Ecotherm to offer a comprehensive BBA certified range of PIR rigid flat roof insulation that tackles heat loss where it matters most.

The resulting CO2 saving is 39.5kg per annum gross (ie without removal of the Comfort Factor, used in CERT of 15%) Fuel type – gas (ie the dominant home heating fuel type – if a weighted average fuel type had been taken, the CO2 saving could have been increased by about 10%). Typical average gas cost of 4p per KWh (figure taken from www.confusedaboutenergy.co.uk as at 1st Feb 2012 is 4.15p). The conversion rate is 0.1899 kg CO2 per KWh and the room temperature maintained at 21°C.
