Aylestone-based Ratae PGI Limited is the first client to sign up to a bespoke healthcare insurance package arranged through Russell Scanlan’s new healthcare division.

Set up just a year ago, Ratae PGI Limited currently employs six staff and is a rapidly growing business that offers the UK’s first personal guarantee insurance product. This makes is easier for those wanting to start a new business to secure bank lending because they are now able to protect themselves financially should the business venture be unsuccessful.

Director Steve Thatcher was keen to add extra value to his employees’ pay package, and saw healthcare insurance as one way in which this could be achieved. “We’re a new business and as much as we’d like to, we cannot offer huge salaries. But we can offer incentives to look after our most valuable asset - our staff - and healthcare cover fitted the bill nicely.

“My focus has very much been to get the business up and running, so it was great to have the team at Russell Scanlan working on our behalf to negotiate the best package.”

Independent insurance broking and risk managing firm Russell Scanlan, based in Desford, launched its new healthcare division earlier this year in response to rising demand.

Other contributory factors included:

  • increasing NHS pressures;
  • the more recognised link between improved health and performance;
  • Government’s move to introduce tax exemption on amounts of up to £500 paid by employers for medical treatment for employees; and
  • a new approach by employers to employee benefits packages due to pension opt-in legislation.

Tony Hulatt – previously from Brokerbility Healthcare in Leicester – was appointed to head up Russell Scanlan’s healthcare division.

Speaking about the deal, he said: “We tested the market on Ratae PGI Limited’s behalf to find the best deal for the best price for their staff. That’s the beauty of our independent status – we offer an impartial and unbiased perspective – meaning we always go the extra mile to ensure value for money and the most comprehensive cover.”

Steve added: “As a local broker, Tony and his colleagues are extremely reliable and understand the importance of a personal service. It’s very reassuring to know that our staff can pick up the phone to chat through any issues as they arise.”

Ratae PGI Limited is aiming to write £30m of new business over the coming year. Visit www.pgicover.co.uk for more details about the business.
