Ruukki Construction, part of SSAB, will deliver Ruukki® Life LowCarbon sandwich panels made with SSAB's Fossil-free steel to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Sweden. The fossil-free steel pilot products are part of the delivery of wall and roof structures as the company expands it’s infrastructure in Sweden. The delivery is part of a collaboration agreement between SSAB and AWS.
SSAB and AWS have today announced the use of a fossil-free steel in new data center construction. As part of the collaboration, Ruukki will supply wall and roof structures for three new data center buildings in Eskilstuna, Katrineholm and Västerås in Sweden. In one of these locations, Ruukki will deliver Ruukki® Life LowCarbon sandwich panels made with SSAB's Fossil-free steel. The panels will cover part of the façade of the new data center.
“Reducing the embodied carbon associated with the construction of our data centers is a key priority for AWS as we work to achieve net zero carbon across our operations by 2040. By partnering with innovative companies like SSAB and Ruukki, we’re taking important steps to decarbonize the materials used in our data centers and set a new standard for sustainable infrastructure. We’re excited to be working with companies at the forefront of fossil-free steel production,” says Kellen O’Connor, Managing Director Europe North, AWS.
"This is an exciting project that shows how well our solutions fit into the data center segment. It is also a great example of how we, together with our customers, can make construction more sustainable. SSAB Fossil-free steel and Ruukki LowCarbon offering are at the forefront in reducing construction emissions," says Per Göransson, Business Director, Building Envelopes, Scandinavia, Ruukki Construction.
Ruukki introduced its new Ruukki® LowCarbon offering in May 2024. The product range includes high-quality building products made of recycled SSAB Zero™ steel with a bio-based GreenCoat color-coating. The products are manufactured close to the customers in Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Poland using fossil-free electricity and delivered in optimized packaging that is transported with minimimal emissions. In the future, the product range will expand to SSAB Fossil-free steel products.
