Terro Offers Pest Spring Survival Tips

ST.  LOUIS—April 13, 2012—Spring has finally sprung, and people across the country are gearing up for a season of outdoor fun.  Whether you’re barbequing or simply relaxing on your patio, nothing crashes a party like an onslaught of insects. However, following these tips from Terro, the industry leader in DIY pest control products, you can get rid of ants, spiders and other pests safely and easily, indoors and out.

 Arm Yourself Against Ants

“There are two basic ways to deal with ants,” says Stew Clark, Director of Research at TERRO. “The first and often only step needed to control ants is to bait the ants with Terro Liquid Ant Baits. The liquid baits are
made with a natural, sweet tasting liquid that attracts ants quickly. The ants consume the bait and carry it back to share with the colony, resulting in the elimination of your ant problem.”   Safe to use around humans and pets, Clark recommends placing Terro’s Indoor Baits anywhere close to where ants are found.

Since most indoor and outdoor infestations are linked to a colony located underground outside the house, Clark also recommends baiting ants outside with TERRO Outdoor Liquid Ant Baits. Using the same ingredients as Terro’s indoor baits, the outdoor bait stations are specially packaged to be durable and weather-resistant enough for outdoor use.

“After baiting, if the ants are still coming, you might need to move to a contact killer to help eliminate the ants,” says Clark.  “Products like Terro Ant Killer Spray and Terro Outdoor Ant Killer granules kill ants instantly and deliver long-lasting residual repellency.”

Terro Ant Killer Spray comes with a tube attachment that allows users to put the product where ants live; in cracks and crevices, behind walls and other hard-to-reach places.  The weather resistant Outdoor Ant granules are easily spread in a convenient shaker bag – no spreader required.

Wipe out Wasps

Wasps and hornets begin to emerge from hibernation in the springtime.  Their painful stings are dreaded by many, but there is now a new, easy and effective way to kill these unwanted pests.  Terro recently i
ntroduced TERRO Wasp & Hornet Killer, an entrapping foam spray that coats nests for a complete kill.  For outdoor and indoor use, the aerosol can has a powerful jet spray that can reach nests up to 20 feet away. The entrapping foam kills wasps and hornets inside the nest as well as any returning.

“Wherever insects are noticed, stand a safe distance from the nest and spray until the surface is moist. The insects will fall to the ground and die,” says Clark.  To prevent wasps from entering your home, Clark recommends spraying around areas where they can enter, including gaps around outdoor plumbing and vents, cracks or crevices in foundations and along sills and ledges.

Conquer Creepy Crawlers

Spotting a spider or a dreaded scorpion for those in the Southwest sends many people running.  However, these creepy crawlers can easily be eliminated with contact killers like TERRO Spider Killer and TERRO Scorpion Killer.  The active ingredients Pyrethrin and Permethrin combine to kill instantly and create a long- lasting barrier to keep pests from coming back. Both sprays can be used indoors or out.

Spiders and scorpions are often found in woodpiles, heaps of dead leaves or anywhere debris builds up. Moist areas such as basements and garages are also prime areas that these pests gravitate towards.  Removing debris around and in your home and keeping damp areas as dry as possible will lessen the possibility these pests entering a home.

“Even the best efforts to keep spiders and scorpions at bay often fail,” says Clark. “The best line of defense is to have a contact killer on hand and to periodically treat the area by spraying in cracks and crevices.”

Think Like a Boy Scout – Be Prepared

According to Clark, the key to surviving spring pest invasion is to be prepared.  “The insects are returning in full force and you’ve got to be ready for them,” Clark emphasizes.  “Arm yourself now with the weapons you’ll need to stop them dead in their tracks.”   Clark offers more spring survival tips in this short video.
