Saab Meets Information Security Standard for Reliable Voice Communication

Report this content

Defence and security company Saab’s IP-based voice security mechanism, called Voice Stream Interceptor (VSI), has been certified by the Norwegian Certification Authority for IT Security, (SERTIT). The VSI meets the strict Common Criteria requirements at an Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 5+ and is the first IP-based voice security mechanism in the world to achieve certification at this high assurance level.

The VSI product is included as part of the integrated voice communication solution, TactiCall. TactiCall can be used in classified systems requiring secure handling of up to NATO SECRET or an equivalent national SECRET level. The journey to Common Criteria EAL 5+ started in May 2015. The reason was a new contract for a secure communication system handling all internal and external communication on board a new Norwegian Logistic and Support Vessel.

“The transfer from analogue to digital technology means more complicated means of handling radio communication and that you have to make sure no one hacks into your system and listens to what you say. This certification proves a higher level of confidence that the system's security features are reliably implemented, in the support of a classified system in active duty within NATO”, says Heino Lundgren, head of Saab in Denmark.

Reliable naval and military voice communication requires the technology “Secure Voice”, also known as RED and BLACK separation, as well as security accreditation of the overall communication solution. TactiCall allows operators to monitor a mix of secure (RED) and non-secure (BLACK) voice communication, and to be able to speak as either secure or non-secure as the situation requires. A conversation can start as non-classified and during the conversation be switched to a classified conversation. It is also possible to listen to both BLACK and RED voices at the same time. It is the Norwegian SERTIT who has certified the VSI product.

“This important milestone strengthens our position as one of the leading providers of integrated radio communications for the military sector”, says Heino Lundgren, head of Saab in Denmark.
