First Lady recognizes the Westside Jewish Community Center for its fresh food initiative

LOS ANGELES – July 08, 2011 Farmscape, LLC announces that First Lady Michelle Obama has recognized the Westside Jewish Community Center’s community garden as part of the USDA People’s Garden Initiative Program and her Let’s Move! Campaign. The modular, raised-bed, organic garden was designed and donated by Farmscape, an urban agriculture company based in Los Feliz.

The garden, installed under the direction of the Jewish social justice organization IKAR, provides organic produce to the local community in West Los Angeles. They hope to expand the program to donate organic produce to those in need.

“Farmscape is excited to be a part of the fresh food movement, and we are honored that First Lady Michelle Obama has recognized the Westside Jewish Community Center garden,” says Farmscape CEO, Jesse Dubois. “Urban agriculture is critically important to long-term sustainability efforts in Los Angeles. Programs like the Westside Jewish Community Center garden reinforce the positive impact urban farms and organic gardening can bring to local communities.”

Farmscape started offering organic garden installation and maintenance to residential customers in 2009. In response to growing interest and requests from institutional clients (schools, small businesses and corporations, civic spaces) the company now offers a wide range of services to non-residential customers. Farmscape hopes that this new strategic focus will become a significant portion of the business moving forward.

The People’s Garden Initiative is an effort by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) which challenges its employees to establish People's Gardens at USDA facilities worldwide or help communities create gardens. The Westside Jewish Community Center Garden will be counted towards the First Lady's goal of 10,000 fresh food initiatives around the country.

Let’s Move! is a campaign, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. The campaign also gives parents helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices.
