Sound and light combine to increase office productivity

Innovative lighting and striking acoustic ceiling design have been brought together by Phillips and Saint-Gobain Ecophon to create a unique office solution which can improve workplace productivity.

Designed to enhance worker well-being and boost concentration in open plan offices, Soundlight Comfort Ceiling combines the very best acoustic performance with the latest in lighting. The new innovation combines Ecophon’s Class A sound absorbing suspended ceiling with embedded LED lighting technology from Phillips. This creates a unique ceiling with complete acoustic coverage and a uniform appearance, while ensuring optimum noise and lighting levels.

Achieving the right noise and light levels in office environments is extremely important to ensure workplaces are as comfortable as possible. With open-plan offices still the most popular design, there are undoubtedly challenges to overcome. Background noise can be very distracting, affecting concentration, while poor lighting can lead to tiredness.

Soundlight Comfort Ceiling provides the sound absorption needed to ensure speech clarity over short distances, whilst reducing the total distance over which sound travels. This is an important benefit, given that over 50% of office work still relates to tasks that require individual focus and concentration.

“Traditionally, acoustics and lighting would exist as two separate systems, so by combining the two, Soundlight Comfort gives architects and interior designers more choice and helps them to more easily create a comfortable and productive working environment,” explains Paige Hodsman, office concept developer at Ecophon.

“We know from research that noise can reduce employee productivity by more than 60% so it’s a hugely damaging and costly distraction. Therefore, there is a real need to ensure the effects of noise are minimised and this is what Soundlight Comfort helps to do.”

Dan Scott, commercial director from Phillips, adds: “Soundlight Comfort offers a clutter-free installation with a clean, modern finish that balances cutting edge design with employee wellbeing. The controllability and quality of LED lighting in the Soundlight Comfort ceiling solution creates a comfortable visual ambiance with reduced glare, which leads to less tiredness at the end of the working day. “

The state-of-the-art LED technology used in the Soundlight Comfort ceiling solution outperforms conventional lighting, delivering superior energy savings. The solution also includes sensors and controls which are adjustable and alter the lighting levels depending on daylight and occupancy in the office. This also helps to reduce energy consumption and lower energy costs.
