Salmones Camanchaca commits to become Carbon Neutral by 2025
• Will implement a strategic plan that will prioritize reductions in the use of fossil fuels, electricity and refrigerants, which are the main sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the Company, and will promote forest stewardship projects.
• Announcement was made in Oslo, Norway, in the context of its Capital Markets Day, the first to be carried out by a Chilean capital company in that country.
Oslo, Norway, August 23, 2019.- Always seeking to reduce its environmental footprint and promote the sustainable development of aquaculture, Salmones Camanchaca reported today its commitment to reduce its net emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) to zero by 2025, anticipating in 25 years the target set by the Chilean Government, and within few months of the COP25 Summit, which will focus on GHGs and their impact on climate change.
“The world is challenged to reconcile economic development and environmental care, and nothing highlights this better than global efforts to reduce GHG emissions. The global context makes us reflect on our contribution, and our practices, since only the sum of millions of efforts can help curtail the effects of global warming. Producers that seek to reduce GHG in their processes and consumers preferring ever more environmentally friendly food are solutions to this global problem. Being carbon neutral by 2025, is the contribution of Salmones Camanchaca”, said the Vice chairman of the Company, Ricardo García, within the framework of the Capital Markets Day, which was held today by Salmones Camanchaca in Oslo, Norway.
In 2018, the company was the first salmon company to register in the “Huella Chile” program of the Ministry of Environment, whose objective is to measure, report and reduce GHG emissions. Recently, the Chilean Government sent a bill to Congress that seeks to reduce country wide carbon emissions to zero by 2050.
“Our commitment to become Carbon Neutral by 2025 is regarding our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions of The Grennhouse Gas Protocol, as well as those related to the disposal of waste (Scope 3). In other words, our commitment encompassess all operations and processes upon which we have control over decisions that influence GHG emissions. Simultaneously, we will begin working with our suppliers to further reduce Scope 3 emissions and the footprint of our final product, said Alfredo Tello, Technical and Sustainability Manager, also present at the meeting in Oslo.
To become carbon neutral, Salmones Camanchaca will implement a strategic plan that will prioritize reductions in the use of fossil fuels, electricity and refrigerants, which are the main sources of emission. Its implementation will involve promoting a strong culture of sustainability within the Company and its suppliers, and optimizing processes, among other specific objectives.
Likewise, the Company will take advantage of a strategic asset, a forest heritage of more than 1,000 hectaresthat will be managed to maximize carbon sequestration.
“The Company's forests have an estimated capacity to capture 14,000 tons of carbon annually. We will implement specific forest stewardship plans that could allow us to compensate as much as half of Salmones Camanchaca’s current footprint said Tello.

Less than two years after its listing in the Norwegian stock market, this Friday, August 23, at the Oslo Concert Hall, Salmones Camanchaca celebrates its first Capital Markets Day, an opportunity in which the Company announced its strategic plan and sustainability policies, and also addressed the challenges of the Chilean aquaculture industry to an important group of shareholders, investors, analysts, media and other industry players.
On behalf of the Company, presentations were conducted by Ricardo García, Vice chairman of Salmones Camanchaca; Manuel Arriagada, CEO; Daniel Bortnik, CFO, and Alfredo Tello, Technical and Sustainability Manager. The Chilean ambassador to Norway, Waldemar Coutts, joined the event.
The activity also considered two conversation panels, in which the challenges of Chilean salmon farming were addressed. One of them, by analysts of the prestigious investment banks Nordea, Pareto and DNB, who closely follow the titles of Salmones Camanchaca. The second, led by the CEOs of important suppliers for the industry: Therese Log Bergjord from Skretting; Morten Nordstad from Pharmaq, and Nina Santi from Aquagen.
