SaltX and Norrenergi in collaboration to reduce CO2 emissions from district heating in Stockholm

The energy storage company SaltX Technology partners with Norrenergi to analyze how their district heating system in northern Stockholm can become fossil-free. Norrenergi reached out to SaltX after the company's winning contribution to the Helsinki Energy Challenge 2021. The same analysis model is now used to map the conditions for making parts of Stockholm's district heating network even more climate-smart.

SaltX's contribution on how the city of Helsinki can become climate neutral by the year 2035, was one out of four winning entries (more about SaltX's winning entry - Smart Salt City here). The victory has generated a lot of interest in the company's energy storage solutions as well as expertise in designing large-scale energy systems. One of the companies that have reached out is the district heating company Norrenergi.

- Norrenergi has an ambitious plan to switch to an even more sustainable energy supply and sees a future where we have eliminated the last proportion of fossil fuels, which today is 1-2 percent. SaltX solutions and expertise can be an important enabler in helping us reach that goal, says Ted Edén, energy system developer at Norrenergi AB.

SaltX's expertise and broad experience in large-scale energy storage with a pilot plant in Stockholm are well known. After winning the Helsinki Energy Challenge, the company now also demonstrates its expertise in designing climate-neutral and large-scale energy systems. The analysis and cost optimization model, created specifically for this challenge, can easily be applied to other scenarios to create fossil-free and highly efficient future energy systems.

- We are very proud of our work for the city of Helsinki where our analysis and optimization model was crucial. With this methodology, we are now in a position where we can model, analyze and develop sustainable energy solutions of any size for both industry and cities. Norrenergi is a perfect match for us as they are willing to take the necessary steps towards a more sustainable future, says Carl-Johan Linér, CEO of SaltX.

Energy storage is a crucial factor in the transition to fossil-free district heating systems. Sweden's entire district heating system needs to be restructured to meet the climate goals. SaltX and Norrenergi's collaboration is a key step in making that transformation happen.
