SaltX builds a fluidized bed reactor for energy storage using nanocoated salt

Nasdaq First North-listed SaltX Technology develops a discharge reactor pilot, to upscale the energy storage solution using SaltX’s patented nanocoated salt. The new reactor is based on fluidized bed technology. It is built together with the global technology provider Sumitomo SHI FW and will be installed at a heating plant outside Stockholm.

In 2019, SaltX built a pilot plant in Berlin with a reactor technology based on a heated screw design for storing and extracting thermal energy in the form of steam with SaltX's nanocoated salt. Following the construction and test runs in Berlin, the company has focused on improving the process using fluidization technology as the next step.

“The construction of the reactor is a step to secure and develop the new technology on a large scale, which will be an important part of our commercialization. It will be a really exciting time in the next upcoming months", says Carl-Johan Linér, CEO of SaltX Technology.

The 100 kW pilot will soon be verified at a heating plant as a first upscaling step. Thereafter, the technology will be further scaled-up to a 1 MWth discharging reactor in a demonstration project that is partly financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.

The new reactor will evaluate the performance of the nanocoated salt combined with the fluidization technology. The goal of the project is to verify the design, validate process parameters and improve plant control for continued optimization.

The pilot will be installed at a heating plant outside Stockholm.

SaltX’s reactor pilot will be commissioned in the beginning of 2021 and tests will be completed in the first quarter.
