SaltX hackathon winners to solve climate change
- Three ideas that can become SaltX next application
Last night, the winners of SaltX first hackathon were announced at Norrsken House in Stockholm. Hand-picked participants in 11 teams with different background and skills competed in three challenges. The winning teams receive, a part from financial support and office space, support from SaltX and its partners to develop their solution, write a business plan and apply for patents.
A portable solar-powered stove, a Tesla with 30% longer range and a sauna storing heat when the electricity prize is low. These are the three winning ideas at SaltX Hack. The ideas were judged based on innovation level, customer value proposition and commercial potential.
- We give entrepreneurs access to our patent portfolio for one reason: it is the fastest way to make a signficant impact of our technology. This is not for our own sake, but because the world needs to solve climate change now", said Karl Bohman, CEO of SaltX Technology.
The three winners will now hopefully convert their solutions into successful businesses . Göran Bolin, founder and CTO at SaltX Technology, who was part of jury, was impressed by the high quality of ideas that were presented.
- I was surprised how quickly the participants managed to prepare proposals with such high technological height. The world needs more good greentech entrepreneurs, and the participants in SaltX Hack have shown that there are many.
Participants may use SaltX patents to solve climate change
SaltX Technology was inspired by the Tesla founder Elon Musk - to open up its technology. The objective is that technology will spread in several segments of the market and thus speed up the development.
One of the winning ideas was a portable solar stove that stores solar heat during the day, to then be used for cooking during night. This reduces the need to use biomass for cooking and boiling water in areas that lack access to the grid.
- The winning proposal of Challenge 2 is just as simple as innovative. The concept addresses one of the biggest challenges of mankind, while freeing up time for millions people in developing countries, mainly women, who do not need to collect firewood but can instead work or study, says Karin Byman, Energy Expert & Senior Project Manager at the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).
Startup coaching and office at Norrsken House
In addition to a contribution from Swedbank of 20,000 SEK, the winning teams will get the necassary coaching to transform their ideas into businesses. Among other things, the winners are offered an office at Norrsken House, which is part of Niklas Adelberth's venture on social entrepreneurs.
About SaltX Hack
More than fifty people, divided into eleven teams, were handpicked to attend a hackathon at Norrsken House this week. The Hack was organized by the First North-listed company SaltX Technology, which opened up its entire patent portfolio at the disposal of its participants. The purpose of the hackathon was to find new commercial applications that will help adress global warming.
About the jury
The jury who appointed the winners was represented by actors from the various important parts of starting a company in the energy sector, ranging from experienced entrepreneurs to energy experts.

The winners of SaltX Hack
SaltX Sauna
Explanation: SaltX Sauna is a sauna that charges the sauna with energy when it's the cheapest, and then use the stored energy during weekend when electricity prices are the most expensive, and people use their sauna. According to the team, 8 percent of Finland’s electricity consumption goes into heating up saunas.

SunFoodX
A portable stove loaded with the sun reduces the need to cook with biomass. It requires no connection to the mains grid. It places the bowl-shaped solar collector in the sun during the day and stores the energy in the salt, then you can cook the food at any time of the day. Just as a washing machine releases time in a family, this invention helps the everyday life when they do not need to gather biomass during daytime.

Tesla Heat Management
Explanation: Using SaltX heat and cold storage, you can optimize Tesla's lithium-ion battery, thus improving the range of electric cars by 30%.
