SaltX has been granted a patent for its electric calciner technology, EAC (Electric Arc Calciner)

SaltX Technology has developed an electrified solution for the industrial process of calcination. Calcination means that material is modified by heating to very high temperatures to change its properties—a method used, among other things, to manufacture lime and cement. The company has now been granted a patent for its electric calcination technology in Sweden.

The technical solution, EAC (Electric Arc Calciner), replaces fossil fuels with renewable electricity and isolates the carbon dioxide released from the material during heating. The innovation provides an entirely emission-free manufacturing process.

The patent granted in Sweden covers several parameters, such as the cyclone's design, the plasma generator’s properties, the material's rotation, and the carbon dioxide's separation. In addition to eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from, for example, the production of quicklime, the technology provides many other benefits. Lars Croon, Head of Innovation at SaltX;

"The EAC provides the opportunity to control the process and material much better than the traditional method. In addition, electric heating with plasma offers excellent heat transfer and energy efficiency advantages."

The areas of use of the now patent-protected electric calcination technology include, in addition to the lime and cement industry, materials such as magnesium, lithium, and carbonate minerals. The company has also applied for patent protection internationally; Corey Blackman, CTO at SaltX says:

"Patent protection is another important piece of the puzzle that is now in place, and we have a positive outlook towards our opportunities to expand protection to include all markets that are of interest to us."

The EAC (Electric Arc Calciner) technology also forms the basis for SaltX's other business area, energy storage, where the technology is used as a charging reactor of energy storage materials.

About calcination:
Calcination is a process in which solid materials are changed by heating to a high temperature but not to their melting point. Calcination usually drives off a substance, brings about a phase transition, or brings about a chemical reaction, often oxidation or reduction. Calcination often makes the material resistant, more stable, more reactive, or in some other way produces a desirable product - calcination is sometimes considered a purification process.
