The deadline for nominations is Friday, November 4, 2011

The San Antonio Conservation Society is accepting nominations through Friday, November 4, 2011 for its Historic Preservation Awards for the Built Environment. The purpose of the Historic Preservation Awards is to honor those who have reached the highest level of accomplishment in historic preservation by recognizing the quality of restoration and rehabilitation projects in the built environment (both residential and non-residential).  Applications are also being accepted for the Society’s Lynn Ford Craftsman Award for the individual who shows “outstanding achievement in a craft” in the art/craft category, preferably in the area of historic preservation.

Award winners will be honored at an Awards Ceremony, which is open to the public and scheduled for March 28, 2012.  Society Board member Claire Golden is Awards Chairperson.

The Conservation Society passionately believes that the restoration or rehabilitation of a historic building is the wisest choice for a property owner, but we know it may not always be the easiest route, so we want to give those stewards of history the recognition they deserve,” says Nancy Avellar, president of the Conservation Society.

Restoration/rehabilitation projects must meet the following requirements:

  • The project must be completed within the last three years preceding November 4, 2011 (the closing date for nominations).
  • Nominations should exhibit recognition and respect for the original design intent of the project and for the period to which it is restored.
  • Adherence to a preservation philosophy is important. New additions or alterations to the building, structure, site or object should have been done in a manner that if additions or alterations were removed in the future, the essential form and integrity would not be impaired.
  • If alterations or additions to the building are of contemporary design, the work must respect the original historical, architectural and cultural qualities.
  • The project should retain the distinguishing qualities and character of the original construction.
  • Only the exteriors of buildings are considered.
  • One award may be bestowed upon an out-of-town project. Contiguous counties to Bexar are not considered out-of-town; those in contiguous counties are considered “in-town.”
  • No more than 10 awards will be given in 2012.

A panel of jurors consisting of out-of-town preservation experts--including preservation architects and architectural historians--will review nominations.

Award winners in 2010 included John Batot House, 108 Barrera Street; Frank Bradford House, 421 Cedar Street; Hornbuckle Residence, 502 Corona; SoFlo Architects Office Campus/Beddell Trailer Company, 1512 S. Flores Street; Pearl Brewery Smokestack, 312 Pearl Parkway; 1225 South Presa Street, Presa Gardens, LLC; Juen House, 625 Shook Avenue; Stinson Municipal Airport Administration Building, 8535 Mission Road; and Karger Building, 723 High Street in Comfort, Texas.

The winner of the 2010 Lynn Ford Craftsman Award—which is not necessarily presented each time the Society holds its Built Environment Awards Ceremony—was Kathleen Trenchard for perpetuating the Mexican folk art tradition of “Papel Picado,” a punched paper craft which dates back to pre-Colombian times. The NIOSA pins (medals) for 2010 and 2011 were designed by Trenchard.

Founded in 1924, the San Antonio Conservation Society is one of the oldest and most active community preservation groups in the United States. Beginning with efforts to prevent historic structures from being razed and to preserve such unique features as the San Antonio River Bend and the city's Spanish Colonial missions, the society has been responsible for saving most of the historic attractions which now make San Antonio one of the top tourist destinations in Texas
