Opening at the San Francisco Art Exchange October 8

SAN FRANCISCO – An electrifying solo exhibition showcasing the works of legendary photographer Lynn Goldsmith. Opening on October 8, 2011 at The San Francisco Art Exchange, “Close and Personal: The Rock Archive of Lynn Goldsmith” is a spectacular visual narrative of music history as told through the eyes of a rock n’ roll aficionado.

In the span of her impressive career, Lynn Goldsmith has photographed some of the most influential figures in rock n’ roll history: Elvis Presley, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Frank Zappa, Debbie Harry, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, The Beastie Boys, and many more. For over four decades she has given the world access into the alluring sphere of celebrity, with the penetrating gaze of her powerful lens. Using the inimitably candid approach to portrait photography that has become Lynn’s signature, she has carved a unique niche for herself among pop-culture image makers.

Having formed close and personal relationships with many of her celebrated subjects, the veil between their private lives and public personas is visibly stripped away in her keenly sensitive approach to taking pictures. The end result are portraits both powerful and emotive, as the vulnerability and charisma of her subjects seamlessly shines through in each shot.

As a fellow recording artist, Lynn has long been a welcomed member of inner rock circles and has been entrusted to document the private lives of some of the most elusive personalities.

“Music can trigger something very private, something that we already know about ourselves but may have forgotten,” Goldsmith says. “More often than not it is about our restlessness.”

The underlying tension that fuels musicians’ drive to compose and perform is often poignantly evident in Lynn’s provocative photography.

In addition to gracing the pages of such major publications as Life Magazine, Newsweek, Time, People The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Interview, Sports Illustrated, and Elle, the multi-award winning photographer’s captivating images have appeared on over 100 album covers. Among the many awards Lynn has received are the prestigious World Press Award for Portraiture and the Lucien Clergue Award. Her work can currently be viewed at the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Smithsonian.

“Close and Personal: The Rock Archive of Lynn Goldsmith” is Lynn Goldsmith’s premier solo exhibition at the San Francisco Art Exchange. Featuring a comprehensive selection of both rare and iconic photographs, the exhibition will also showcase an array of photographic mosaics, a relatively recent technique the artist has incorporated in her body of work as inspired by Chuck Close and guided by his imperative, “art is work”. Like the celebrities captured by her lens, these intricate works of art tell an elaborate story once viewed from up close and personal.

“Lynn was always the best rock-and-roll photographer.” - Tom Petty
