Gered Mankowitz book signing at San Francisco Art Exchange “The Experience: Jimi Hendrix at Masons Yard”
SAN FRANCISCO – Gered Mankowitz, one of the greatest rock photographers of the last 50 years, is about to release his newest book “The Experience: Jimi Hendrix at Masons Yard.” Mankowitz will be at the San Francisco Art Exchange on Friday, October 1 for a book signing from 5:00 to 7:00pm. The book is being released on September 18 to honor the day Hendrix passed away 40 years ago. The Experience includes photographs of Hendrix and his band taken by Mankowitz, and essays by some of music’s top journalists. The photographs are a mix of Hendrix classics and some never before seen images, which will bring readers memories from Jimi’s glory days.
Mankowitz captured a historical moment at his legendary Masons Yard Studio, just after Hendrix performed a memorable BBC session, marking him as one of the most influential musicians of his era. Mankowitz was assigned the task of capturing the bands personality, and created the visual trademarks the trio is known for today.
San Francisco Art Exchange is also honoring Hendrix this September with the photographic exhibition Can You See Me? – A Life through the Lens, which runs September 25 through October 26. Can You See Me can be viewed online and in the gallery at 458 Geary street. The exhibition showcases photos of Hendrix taken by 13 European and American photographers, which are presented in association with Raj Prem Fine Art Photography.
Over the last 50 years Mankowitz has photographed The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful, Billy Idol, Gary Glitter, Dave Edmuns, Annie Lennox, Slade, Duran Duran, Traffic, Free, The Small Faces, Soft Machine, Slade, Suzi Quatro, Sweet, Elton John, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, ABC, The Yardbirds, and Jimi Hendrix. He now lives in North London and photographs for the advertising and music industry, and also photographs bands for album covers such as Oasis, The Verve, Catatonia, Kula Shaker and more.
