Beatles to Bowie photography showcase opens to public in one week

SAN FRANCISCO – On July 17, the San Francisco Art Exchange presents Beatles to Bowie.  Over 50 photographs will be on display from European and American photographers whose lenses were inside witnesses capturing the most iconic images from 1962-1974.  British celebrity photographer Terry O’Neill is including a number of never before seen photos that have just been discovered in his personal archive.

O’Neill had access to parts of new British musicians’ lives that other photographers at the time didn’t.  At a private party in actor Peter Sellers’ Hollywood home, O’Neill luckily brought his camera to capture Bill Wyman, Ronnie Wood, and David Bowie’s impromptu jam session in 1974.  He spent time with British bands before they made it big in the US, capturing moments like Lennon and McCartney performing on a British television show in 1963, the fresh-faced Rolling Stones in 1964 touring London pubs, and Keith Richards and Bryan Jones backstage preparing for their first television appearance in 1964.  Also included are outtakes from David Bowie’s Diamond Dog publicity shoots, and Led Zeppelin on tour.

Other musicians portrayed in Beatles to Bowie are The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Syd Barrett, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Marianne Faithfull, Eric Clapton, Queen, Debbie Harry, and other icons of the period.  A special inclusion of Lou Reed’s Transformer album cover is in the show, signed by both Reed and photographer Mick Rock.

Featured photographers include David Montgomery, Joel Brodsky, Ethan Russell, Gered Mankowitz, Ian Dickson, Barry Feinstein, Paul Saltzman, Baron Wolman, Bob Seidemann, Jerrold Schatzberg, Astrid Kirchherr, Iian MacMillan, Michael Cooper, David Redfern, and others.

Beatles to Bowie, which has been produced and curated in associated with long time friend of the gallery, Raj Prem Fine Art Photography, will be showing at the San Francisco Art Exchange (458 Geary Street) for one month only, and is also viewable online at www.sfae.com.  For information on attending the opening night reception on Saturday, July 17 from 7:00 – 10:00pm, e-mail info@sfae.com.  Stop by the gallery any other time until mid-August to view the photos in person.
