Cutting tool innovations for all types of aerospace materials

Cutting tool and tooling systems specialist, Sandvik Coromant, will be one of around 2,000 exhibitors at the landmark 50th edition of the Paris Air Show taking place on 17-23 June. The company will present its full range of aerospace solutions for component machining at the show, but will have special emphasis in three areas: the milling of aluminium; the drilling of nickel-based super alloys and titanium; and milling of CFRP composites.

Standard as well as special solutions will be on display. The latter includes a new milling cutter for aluminium machining which, when used in combination with a high power spindle, achieves unprecedented levels of stability for high speed milling. Developed by Sandvik Coromant engineers in France, this milling cutter will be of interest to any manufacturer involved in the roughing of aerospace frame components.

Visitors to the show interested in the production of Ni/Co-based superalloys, titanium or stainless steels, are invited to see for themselves the benefits afforded by CoroDrill®  R846 solid carbide drills with internal coolant supply. Of particular note, the range has just been extended and now spans diameters 3-16 mm.

CoroDrill R846 features convex edge geometry and a larger back taper for optimized chip formation and hole quality. The cutting edge offers consistent curve shape and protected corners for reliable and safe drilling processes in high value-added components. Cutting speed increases of up to 100% are achievable, thus maximizing drilling performance in aerospace applications such as turbine parts.

Sandvik Coromant will also have ample solutions on the stand for visitors interested in improving their machining processes for composite and metallic stack materials – using either hand held, power feed or CNC machines.

Among the latest introductions is the new CoroMill Plura compression end mill for composites. This innovative tool combines positive and negative helix design to ‘compress’ the top and bottom of the component edge. The result is minimized opportunity for splintering, a common defect when machining CFRP and many other types of engineering composites.

The Sandvik Coromant Smart Hub can be found on Smart Hub B139 in Hall 4.
