Sandvik Coromant Featured in Latest Edge Factor Episode about Chilean Miners Rescue

Sandvik Coromant has recently been featured in the latest episode of The Edge Factor Show; a series that introduces the general public to real-life manufacturing marvels. The newest video captures the manufacturing process behind the drill that enabled the Chilean miner rescue last October, a process that included Sandvik Coromant, a leading manufacturer of metal cutting tools.

The rescue of the Chilean miners and the role that Center Rock, a Berlin, P.A.-based company played in it was so significant that United States President Barack Obama told the story of Center Rock and its President, Brandon Fisher, in the 2011 State-of-the-Union speech.

“Along with others, he [Brandon Fisher] began drilling a 2,000 foot hole into the ground, working three or four days at a time with no sleep. Thirty-seven days later, Plan B succeeded, and the miners were rescued,” said the President.

The CoroDrill 800 ejector drill for deep hole drilling from Sandvik Coromant proved to be a necessary part of making the custom-made Center Rock drill. The company’s products are known for their strength and long lifetime. Sandvik Coromant partners closely with its customers to continuously improve the quality and reliability of its products.

“We’ve found that their tools last longer and have better quality than competing products, and those are precisely the factors that came into play in a month-long creation of the evacuation route for these miners who were thousands of feet underground,” said Fisher.

“Sandvik Coromant is honored to have supported Center Rock in their part in the rescue of the Chilean miners,” said Björn Roodzant, Director of Communications at Sandvik Coromant. “Our employees have always taken great pride in their work, and as they watched the rescue operation unfold, they knew that the CoroDrill technology contributed to that effort.  We couldn’t be more pleased,” he added.
