SAS Cargo invests in new cooling technology

A new container for keeping products cool under transportation has been developed. It works basically as a mobile refrigerator and is run by electricity, which ensures a constant temperature over a long period of time.

- With this new cooling container we are able to offer customers with temperature sensitive shipments another high quality product. It guarantees a constant temperature all over the container from the moment it leaves the shipper and until it reaches the consignee, says Kenneth Marx, President of SAS Cargo Group. The cool container keeps a constant temperature between 2 and 25 degrees Celsius for more than 36 hours without a power source, which means that it does not need any power during the flight. On the ground it can easily be plugged into a local power source if the transport is longer than 36 hours. The new transport solution is designed for the Pharma/Fresh/Cool product markets that need reliable and stable temperatures during the air transport. The container is the result of cooperation between the two Swedish companies AB AirContainer and the Royal Institute of Technology together with SAS Cargo, who has tested the container over the past months. The first "flying refrigerator" will be ready to use in September. Most cool transports today are controlled by the use of dry-ice. It keeps products cool, but it is difficult to maintain a constant temperature all over the container.
