The Manchester Velodrome played host to a successful Guinness World Record attempt this weekend.

The Manchester community came out in force to support the event, which saw the Guinness World Record™ for the most amount of electricity generated on bikes within 24 hours, completely smashed!

Pedal power throughout the 24 hours ensured over 72,000 watts was clocked up – obliterating the existing record which stood at 12,953 watts.

The record also raised a serious amount of cash for cancer charity; The Christie. Soreen were to donate 5p for every watt hour generated throughout the event; however they have announced a donation of £10,000 to the charity – more than doubling the original total raised.

The event was kicked off by former Olympian, Iwan Thomas who set a high standard powering the totaliser. Greater Manchester Police were also in attendance as well as a range of representatives from businesses around the city. Cycling clubs from Manchester and the surrounding areas were also extremely well represented, battling it out to win a year’s sponsorship deal from Soreen for producing the most watts as a team.

Cycling enthusiasts; David Clark, Carl Cleghorn, Stuart Kinsey and Darren Riley all completed the entire 24 hours and remained in good spirits even throughout the early hours of the morning, only pausing for toilet and stretching breaks!

Paul Tripp, Managing Director of Soreen states; “The team at Soreen felt this was an ideal opportunity to raise much needed money for a cause close to all of our hearts.  Using Soreen’s established links with health and sports we thought this was a great way for our Manchester consumers to support The Christie and be a part of history by breaking a Guinness World Record™ in the process.  The level of support was fantastic and a massive thank you goes out to all of those involved.”

NB: Guinness has confirmed that this is an official World Record, however, the final total of watts raised is set to increase following official confirmation and verification from organisers.
