Scancem invests SEK 50 million in doctors of engineering program Scancem, the international building materials group, is making a major investment to enhance technical competence within the company. In cooperation with universities and technical institutes in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, Scancem will be investing approximately SEK 50 million over a five- year period in a program for doctoral candidates in the engineering sciences. "The project is intended to supplement and support long-term R&D programs that the Scancem Group has carried out for many decades," says Stefan Westberg, Chairman of the Scancem Scientific Council. "The goal is to have approximately 15 doctoral candidates who can conduct research and graduate with a doctor's degree in engineering within fields that are beneficial to Scancem's operations. The first eight candidates and projects will be appointed during the spring." Parallel with their research, the doctoral candidates will be employed in one of Scancem's five business areas. In their doctoral studies, they are to work with product and process development within the mineral-based building materials field. The long-term goal is to assign them a managerial position within the Scancem Group. "During their education the doctoral candidates will also participate in a tailor-made internal management program in which industry's role and interaction with society will be an important part of their studies. The goal is to improve their possibilities to work as a potential manager in Scancem and international industrial operations. In these areas, Scancem will cooperate with the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce and the Lexivision communications and media company in Stockholm," ends Stefan Westberg.
