New Scandic Hotel in Bergen city As of February 2001, Bergen Hotel, right in the heart of Bergen, will be a part of the Scandic chain on a franchise basis. "Our customers have long been requesting a hotel in Bergen's city centre," says Ivar Villa, Managing Director of Scandic Hotels in Norway. "We are, therefore, particularly happy that Bergen Hotel is becoming a Scandic Hotel." Villa also maintains that the new hotel will not be a competitor to Scandic's present hotel in Bergen, which is located at Flesland airport. "The city centre and the airport constitute two separate markets. The hotels will, therefore, complement each other if anything," he continues. Bergen Hotel with its 171 rooms runs one of Norway's biggest congress centres, Bergen Congress Center. The centre has a capacity of up to 800 people and receives more than 50,000 course participants a year. Over the past few years, the hotel has been continuously renovated and, now, improvements to the hotel's entrance, reception, lobby and restaurant are next on the list. The restaurant will, at a later date, be extended to accommodate 150 extra seats. After the takeover on 1 February, both of Scandic's hotels in Bergen will change names, the new names being Scandic Hotel Bergen Airport and Scandic Hotel Bergen City.
