New survey: "Sun and sand tourist" and "adventurer" are most common travel types among young Swedes Among young Swedes, the majority characterize themselves as "sun and sand tourists." Following these come "the adventurer," "the partygoer," and " the sportsman." This is the result of a survey commissioned by SAS in cooperation with Gallup to chart young persons' travel habits and motives. The young people who participated in the survey expressed the travel category to which they belong. Four out of ten young people described themselves as "sun and sand tourists." This group includes many girls and the common travel destinations are Greece, Spain and Turkey. They often take charter trips with friends or parents. Their reasons for traveling abroad are, to a larger degree than in other groups, sun, sand and shopping. One in five say that they belong to the "adventurer" travel type. More males than females belong to this group. The adventurers often take scheduled flights, with parents or friends. They want to experience nature, adventure and challenges on a journey. The adventurers often spend more than SEK 10,000 per year on travel. The "partygoer" travel type accounts for 17 percent of young people, normally a man aged 19-22 years, who prefers to travel to Denmark. He often has casual romances on his trips abroad. More girls than boys belong to the "culturally interested" group. Nature, studies, culture and music festivals are important reasons to travel. Culturally interested travelers more often make trips alone than other travel types. They like to socialize with the local population and try to cook the food they have eaten on their trips abroad. Only 5 percent categorize themselves as "sportsmen." This group largely consists of males aged 15-18 years, who both participate in sports and watch sports on trips abroad. There are large differences between the sexes when it comes to reasons for traveling. Males travel abroad to party, take part in sports and experience adventure to a larger degree than females. On the other hand, females travel abroad to shop, lie in the sun and bathe, meet relatives and friends, and experience culture. The survey was conducted among young people aged 15-26 years who have traveled abroad at least once during the past year. A corresponding survey was conducted in Denmark and Norway. A total of 3,000 young people were interviewed, 1,000 in each country.
