SAS first with traffic information via cell phone As of February 1, 1999, a test group of some 300 SAS passengers can obtain flight traffic information directly via their cellular phones. The participants in the group will test the new telephone service, which is being launched jointly by SAS and Europolitan, for a three-month period. This makes SAS the first carrier in the airline industry to provide a service whereby passengers can subscribe for and seek their own flight traffic information. The new service means that passengers can be supplied with information on their own cellular phones about whether their booked flight is subject to delay, or cancelation. Passengers can also obtain information about new departure times and updates about possible changes. No message will be released if a flight is to depart on time. The information provided will also cover arriving flights. Passengers will be able to choose between two ways of receiving the information: 1. Automatic messages transmitted to the cellular phone if the booked flight times are subject to change. 2. Passengers send a request for information via the cell phone regarding departure/arrival times and receive an answer within a number of seconds. To utilize this service, passengers must have a GSM cell phone capable of transmitting/receiving SMS (Short Message Service) information. It is intended that all telephone operators be connected to the new service within the near future.
