Well Being - SAS's new concept for long-distance flights SAS cares about the well-being of its passengers when in-flight. Every passenger should feel comfortable while onboard and arrive rested and in good form. During long-distance flights, passengers move between time zones, often sitting still for many hours at a time, posing both physical and mental challenges. By taking a number of steps, many of them quite simple, flying can be made a more comfortable experience and the hours following a flight easier. With that in mind, SAS has developed a number of different services and products aimed at having a positive influence on well-being. These includes eating and drinking onboard and extend to how people relax, sleep, wake up, work, and enjoy in-flight entertainment - in essence, all of the ways that personal satisfaction can be increased during flights. These include: food and drink It is extremely important to drink sufficient amounts of fluids during a flight. SAS offers passengers plenty of water throughout the flight. In Business Class, each passenger receives their own water bottle after the first meal, while water is served on an ongoing basis in Economy Class to increase passenger comfort. Following a night onboard, many prefer a light breakfast, which SAS offers in place of a traditional breakfast. SAS's culinary concept for in-flight meals goes under the name Scandinavian World Cooking and has generated a great deal of attention in gastronomic circles. It involves using fresh raw materials, with less fat and the right kind of fat, and generous amounts of fruits and vegetables, served in colorful presentations to everyone onboard, in both Business and Economy Class. Vegetarian meals are always available as an alternative in Business Class, while in Economy Class vegetarian and other special meal requests are accommodated in conjunction with ticket booking. relax/sleep/wake up gently In Business Class, SAS offers a special seat - the SAS Sleeper Seat - which can be adjusted to a fully reclined position. The number of available seats is limited and must usually be booked in advance for an additional fee. Being able to reduce noise levels makes it easier to relax and is a requirement for many. This is easily accomplished through the use of earplugs, which are distributed to all passengers. In Business Class, everyone receives a comfort kit containing earplugs, a mask to block out light, toothbrush and toothpaste, skin lotion, lip balm, warm socks and a "please do not disturb" sign. In Economy Class, everyone receives earplugs and a mask. Light levels within the cabin also play a major role in well-being. Reading lights are available at every seat in Business Class, providing good illumination for those who wish to work while not disturbing other passengers. A gentle wake-up also affects well-being throughout the rest of the day. SAS gently rouses its passengers to the strains of calming Scandinavian music while displaying beautiful pictures depicting comforting Scandinavian motifs, resulting in a pleasant esthetic experience. In the event that a passenger should have the misfortune of delayed baggage upon arrival, both Business and Economy Class travelers are provided with an overnight kit containing essential personal articles. work/entertainment For many, it is natural, if not essential, to work during a flight. SAS strives to create as functional a working environment as possible onboard. Now passengers in Business Class can work on their personal computers using electrical hookups provided by SAS. SAS is actively working to increase the variety of its in-flight entertainment options. It is installing screens in every seat on its new A340/330 aircraft, which will go into service later this year, offering a rich variety of movies, music channels and games. physical activity onboard During flights, it is important to engage in some form of physical activity, and many people like to get up and walk in the isle. There is, however, also quite a bit one can do while seated in order to avoid stiff muscles. Small, simple toe and arm motions can significantly increase personal well-being. Bar for back exercises In the Business Class section of the cabin, SAS has installed a bar for back exercises. By doing a few simple motions, one can counteract pressure on the back and stimulate the circulation of blood. Video film SAS is currently putting together a video film that will show, in a general way, how to stimulate well-being during long flights. Plans call for showing the film shortly after takeoff and will be introduced later this year. In the event of acute illness, SAS has arranged for immediate access to medical experts via satellite telephone. SAS crews are trained to act quickly in such situations. Should it become necessary to land, the crew is advised on the appropriate airport at which to land and an ambulance is waiting for transport to a hospital. personal comfort Everyone wants to feel fresh during the flight, and it is the small details that are often the most important. On long-distance SAS flights, clean lavatories containing items such as skin cream, hand sanitizer and hand cream are a given. We know that our passengers especially appreciate our extra efforts in keeping the lavatories clean throughout the flight. We've also seen to it that the lavatories are a little more spacious, minimizing a closed-in feeling. Sewing supplies, combs, razors/shaving cream, nylon stockings, nail files, shoehorns, shoe polish and spot remover are also available as needed. The entire service offering and concept of well-being onboard is described in a brochure entitled "The art of landing in good shape after a long flight..." and is available in Business Class. It also provides expert advice on sleep patterns, jetlag, alcohol consumption and more. We continue to develop our products to make flying even more comfortable. Currently, we are working to see how to make the air onboard less dry. Maintaining adequate humidity levels has a major impact on well-being. Once the new A340 aircraft are put into service, passenger comfort while sitting will improve considerably in both Business and Economy Class. More generous legroom, a more comfortable seat angle, footrests, lumbar support, better carry-on storage, mirrors, and better illumination are some of the new features we can promise. In Business Class, a buffet will be set up in-between meals - an exciting new culinary experience. It will include an espresso maker, water, soda, wine, beer, fruit etc. A new and improved version of the popular comfort kit, filled with essential items, will be introduced, as will a special comfort kit for children.
