Enviro at Automationsdagarna: “Today, everyone is talking about CO2 reduction, so Enviro’s processes and tools are highly topical just now”
There was considerable interest in Enviro’s processes and material recovered from end-of-life tyres when Olov Ershag, the company’s COO, spoke at Automationsdagarna in Gothenburg on 5 February. Ershag presented the business and the advantages of working with the digital tool Comos. Sustainability was a major theme at the conference.
“Enviro’s technology is becoming increasingly relevant as more industries are becoming environmentally aware. Five years ago, few companies were interested in CO2 negative production, but today there’s widespread talk of CO2 reduction”, says Olov Ershag, COO at Enviro.

Many of the industry’s biggest actors came together at ITF’s Automationsdagarna in Gothenburg to discuss challenges and opportunities for the future of industry in Sweden. Olov Ershag, COO at Enviro, was invited to give two talks describing Enviro as a company and how they work to create an effective information structure with the digital tool Comos.
“With Comos, we share high-quality and consistent information between different disciplines such as process, electricity and automation. We use the tool to manage our equipment hierarchy, flow diagrams, electrical cabinets and documentation. Queries sent to the database allow us to easily create lists of information relevant to various disciplines. For example, an electrician wants different information on their list than a buyer does.”
Comos is one of the programs Enviro uses from the Siemens Digital Enterprise Suite, but there are also future opportunities. The program SIMIT, together with the PCS7 control system, facilitate virtual commissioning of a plant, enabling operators to be trained in the operator interface before the plant is constructed.
“This allows us to create different scenarios with simulated problems that the operators can learn to handle. We can design tests that the operators must pass before they are certified to operate the real plant. By using virtual commissioning, we have better control of operator competence, and we more quickly reach full production when the plant is finished”, says Olov Ershag.
“Because Enviro will be a partner in new plants, it’s important that we think about how the plant will be driven in operational terms. The advantage of this system is that it’s ready to be expanded with maintenance procedures and spare parts management. Plant documentation is kept alive and up-to-date.”
Olov Ershag also presented Enviro in terms of the technology and market development for the recovered carbon black and special oil products which have recently drawn a great deal of interest. For example, a number of refineries are interested in the large proportion of bio-based oil that can be recovered from tyres. The oil can be used to manufacture bio-fuel or used for base oil products, and this is an area where Enviro is currently taking part in a research project with RiSE and Nynäs.
“It’s clear that the environmental and sustainability aspects have become more important in recent years. For example, Preem say that in 2030 they are planning to produce 5 million m3 of renewable fuel. When the applications for Enviro’s oils increase, this drives demand for the recovered products and thus the economic benefits of establishing our plants.”
The interest in recovered carbon black has also increased hugely, and demand is growing constantly. Tyre and rubber manufacturers have clear environmental objectives with increased demand for recovered material in their products, and this is where Enviro’s high-quality carbon black has already gained ground. Today, Enviro has customers indicating that they need recovered carbon black from a total of three recycling plants.
“We’re currently running a number of projects at the existing plant at Åsensbruk to increase production speed and availability. We want to run 24 hours a day, including weekends, which would significantly increase production.
But the capacity of the Åsensbruk plant isn’t enough to meet the market’s requirements. In two years, we’ll probably see a need for tens of thousands – if not hundreds of thousands – of tonnes of recovered carbon black. And the oil has an even greater market demand.
We can construct a large number of plants and still only fulfil a small part of the needs of the carbon black market, which is now increasingly shifting to sustainable material. The market is enormous, and it’s now that Enviro’s materials are required”, says Olov Ershag, COO at Enviro.

Enviro is a company developing, building and operating industrial plants for material recovery from End of Life Tyres (ELT). The company has developed a process, based on a patented technology, where gas generated in the process is heating the tyres in absence of oxygen. This enables the materials in the tyres to decompose and be recovered instead of incinerated. Thus, a sustainable recovery of the resources Carbon black, Oil, Steel and Gas is obtained. The products are used in new products, replacing fossil resources to help the customers reach their sustainability targets. Enviro was founded in 2001, has its head office in Gothenburg and runs its own plant for ELT tyres in Åsensbruk, Sweden. The company is listed on the First North Growth Market with Mangold Fondkommission AB, tel. +46 (0)8 5030 1550, ca@mangold.se, as its Certified Advisor. www.envirosystems.se
