Breakthrough for Scania coaches in Sardinia

Scania’s sales and service company in Italy − together with Spanish bus bodybuilder Irizar − has made a powerful breakthrough in Sardinia and sold 210 intercity coaches to Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti (ARST), the island’s leading bus operator.

“Behind this success is a customer-adapted product concept, including the new Scania Irizar i4 intercity coach and a complete service package,” says Bengt Rasmusen, General Manager of Scania Bus Italy.

ARST is Sardinia’s leading bus operator in the intercity segment, transporting more than 12 million passengers yearly. The 210 new Scania coaches are part of the company’s renewal of its nearly 500-vehicle fleet to achieve better environmental performance.

All coaches will be delivered to ARST this year. Among major reasons for choosing the Scania Irizar i4 were its good operating economy and environmental performance, using Scania’s new 9-litre, 280 hp EEV engine featuring Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology.

EEV is a stricter emission standard introduced by the European Union to promote the use of the best possible environmental technology in sensitive settings. EGR reduces emissions during actual combustion, eliminating the need for aftertreatment equipment and tanks to carry additives on board the vehicle.

The styling of the Scania Irizar i4 is eye-catching, without compromising usability. It is Scania’s latest offering in the intercity and chartered coach market. The body, built around a robust steel structure, meets the stricter R66-01 standard for rollover strength that is expected to go into effect within the next few years.
