Scania at Transport Logistic 2001 Integrated GSM/GPS and telematics from Scania Heavy truck manufacturer Scania launches several extensions to its on- board and office computer systems, including integrated communication, positioning and, in partnership with German gedas telematics, a comprehensive web-based logistics system with instant vehicle access and messaging. The new systems will be on the market from October 2001. "Scania's IT philosophy open system architecture fits perfectly with those of gedas," says Peter Gillbrand, MD of Scania Infotronics. "We are now able to offer a complete logistics system to our customers, including fleet analysis tools and vehicle data. Initially, sales will be restricted to the German market, but the systems will be operational throughout Europe from the start." The partnership with gedas telematics is under the umbrella of Scania Deutschland's vehicle management services, OptiMile. Scania can thus now offer German operators a comprehensive web-based logistics system with instant vehicle access and messaging throughout Europe. The partnership is open to similar co-operation in other countries. The on-board systems have been developed by Scania's IT-development company, Scania Infotronics. The logistics systems are based on logiweb, the logistics portal for transport operators recently launched by gedas telematics (CeBit 2001). gedas telematics is an IS/IT-company within the VW-owned gedas Group. The combined systems comprise the following components: ·A handheld computer that derives data from the vehicle's internal data CAN-bus. ·The handheld computer is part of Scania's Fleet Analysis System - a multi-parameter trip computer and logger for vehicle data, combined with office software for vehicle, fleet and driver analysis. ·A new GSM/GPS-communication module. This module is integrated with the handheld computer as an on-board logistics terminal that interacts via SMS-messages with the office system. The intervals are set in the office system. ·The on-board logistics system includes a hands-free telephone system, two-way communication and messaging with the logistics system in the office. The system can be extended with modules e.g. for: - tracking and tracing - route information and navigation - cargo data such as scanning of barcodes. ·The office logistics system is composed of corresponding modules. ·The logistics interface for the office operator is via a web- based portal that logs all data transmitted from the vehicle. · Simultaneously Scania launches a web-based fleet performance site for in-depth analysis of vehicle, fleet and driver data. This data can also be transmitted to the office via the GSM/GPS-module. · The new systems are compatible with Scania's existing Fleet Analysis System, enabling simple upgrading to an advanced on-board communication and telematics station. * * * More information is available at www.scania.com, Scania at Transport Logistic 2001.
