Scania expands in the Middle East Scania's independent distributors in Jordan and Lebanon are both inaugu- rating new distributor and service facilities this week. With the new premises in Amman, which are being formally opened today, Scania is now strategically positioned on the 1300 km long main route to Baghdad, Iraq's only link with the port of Aqaba. "Through our distributor Kawasmi & Partners, Scania has a firm grip on the Jordanian market, making us the second-largest truck brand here," says Claes Torén, Senior Vice President and director in charge of marketing and sales on Scania's markets in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Africa. With the recently completed investments in an all-new distribution unit with service and related facilities for transit traffic to and from Bagh- dad - when that route is reopened - Scania is well equipped for continued expansion. Scania has a number of major customers in Jordan, and one of the largest is Jordan Petroleum Refinery. The Jordanian Minister of Transport and Swedish ambassador Klas Gierow at- tended the inauguration of the new facility. Later this week, Scania's distributor in Lebanon, Someco S. A. R. L., is opening a new service centre in Beirut. The Lebanese market is now growing after years of civil strife. About 200 heavy construction trucks from Scania are involved in the capital city's rebuilding programme. As the pace of construction and normalisation increases, however, there is an ac- companying increase in the need for distribution trucks. Lebanon became Scania's first export market in the Middle East and the first orders there were delivered back in 1945. Today, Scania is the sec- ond-largest truck brand in the country.
