Scania introduces a new generation of marine engines in Latin America Scania now maximises the use of its extensive production investments for the 4-series trucks and buses. These included a brand new high-tech engine plant in São Paulo. This facility is now also used to build marine engines for the Latin American markets, incorporating the latest in engine technology. Identi- cal to the units marketed in Europe and the rest of the world, the new 12- litre engines are very compact, have exceptional operating economy and are de- signed for easy servicing. Scania is introducing a new 12 litre marine engine in Latin America. This com- pact engine, called the DI12, can deliver up to 675 hp. Designed specifically for marine use, it has more power, is smaller in size and lighter than other products on the market. In addition, it meets the emission standards in force today and those that are anticipated in the next few years. The new Scania engines are intended for commercial transport craft and patrol boats. The 675 hp version has been developed especially for pleasure boats. The DI12 engines are 1,341 mm long and only 999 mm high and weigh only 1,150 kg when equipped with the low-profile oil pan. These characteristics make it the engine with the best power-to-weight ratio in the Brazilian market in its area of operation. Technical innovations The DI12 is fitted with Scania's electronic engine management system, DEC2. The system ensures precise combustion control and provides better engine re- sponse. It also permits much lower idling speeds - a benefit for light vessels with big propellers. Scania's unique Saver Ring is fitted, along with Keystone-type piston rings. In combination, these two features significantly extend engine life, while re- ducing lubrication oil consumption to less than 0.3 g/kWh. The new engines have separate cylinder heads to facilitate one-man servicing when space is restricted. Four valves per cylinder (two intake and two ex- haust) permit greater and more precise control of the gas and fuel flow into the combustion chambers. The result is more efficient combustion, lower fuel consumption and lower exhaust emission levels. A unique cam-roller system operates the valves. The camshaft is placed high in the block to reduce the length of the pushrods and to increase precision. En- gine cooling and charge-cooling are handled by a twin-circuit heat exchanger mounted on the side of the engine. This Scania design improves engine cooling at full load, since the cooling water is cooled twice. At low load it heats the intake air and thus reduces the amount of white smoke. A Brazilian product This new marine engine from Scania will be produced entirely in Brazil. A large portion of Scania's investments were made to expand and modernise the production facilities for the new generation of trucks, buses and engines. The result is a product suited for marketing anywhere around the globe. Sold throughout the world, the DI12 is manufactured exclusively in Brazil and in Sweden. The production facilities are similar in both countries, incorporating ad- vanced robotised machining and assembly stations. These two factories - in Sö- dertälje, Sweden and São Paulo, Brazil - have equally high environmental and quality standards.
