Scania introduces V8 in Brazil With the introduction of its Rei de Estrada (King of the Road) prestige model, Scania offers the most powerful truck in the Brazilian market and is the first to market an engine complying with Euro 3, the emission standard that will come into force in Brazil in 2005. Powered by a 480 hp 16-litre V8 engine, the model is launched this week at the FENATRAN Transport Fair in São Paulo. The launch of the Rei de Estrada will reinforce Scania's technological leadership in the Brazilian heavy truck market, where it is the dominant player with a market share of around 30%. However, factors other than prestige and brand development are behind the introduction of the V8; a powerful engine of this type is also needed in the growing B-double segment of longer vehicle combinations with higher combination weights. "With this V8, we can offer an engine with superior tractive power and driveability," explains Silvio Munhoz, truck sales manager of Scania Brazil. The Rei de Estrada model is available in 4x2 and 6x4 configurations with a forward-control sleeper cab. Standard equipment comprises ABS brakes, traction control, a trip computer, air conditioning (CFC-free) and Scania Alert. Options include the Scania Opticruise automatic gearchanging system and Scania Retarder. Externally, features such as a pearlescent blue finish, chromed air horns, a sunvisor with integrated position lights and aluminium wheels set the model apart. The exclusive character of the truck is further emphasised by the heated, electrically adjustable door mirrors, leather trim and air-sprung seats. Between 1975 and 1994, Scania sold just over 6,000 V8-engined trucks on the Brazilian market, ranging from the 350 hp LK140 to the 450 hp T143 and R143. Since 1998, the 420-hp, 12-litre unit has been the most powerful Scania engine sold in Brazil. "The engines are imported from Sweden. However, only two new tools had to be introduced in our service workshops need to service the new engine. This is due to the fact that many of the parts of the new engine are the same as in the 11 and 12-litre engines produced in Brazil since 1998," adds Silvio Munhoz.
